A BRISBANE residential tower, with all the amenities of an inner-city suburb, including Queensland’s largest vertical green wall, has been named the best residential high-rise in Australia.

South Brisbane’s The Standard, by Aria Property Group, won the Urban Development Institute of Australia’s top award at a ceremony in Sydney this week.

It was the fourth national award in six years for Aria and follows the decision to scrap an even more ambitious green tower, Urban Forest, after the development was deemed unfeasible earlier this month.

While the failed project was a blow for Aria and Brisbane City Council, it is not the end for Brisbane’s green legacy.

“When we set ourselves and the city the goal of trying to deliver one of the world’s greenest and sustainable buildings ever built, we knew that it was never going to be easy to achieve,” Aria residential development manager Michael Hurley said.

“We are still incredibly passionate about delivering upon that goal and helping the Lord Mayor and State Government (with) their vision of delivering the cleanest, greenest, and most sustainable Olympic Games ever.”

Other Queensland projects to receive national UDIA awards on Thursday night were Drift by Mosaic from the Mosaic Property Group which won Australia’s top medium density development award, while Mirvac won for Diversity in Development.

Mr Hurley said the UDIA awards showed Brisbane was setting the benchmark for the rest of the country.

“For a long time, everyone looked to Sydney and Melbourne as leading the way nationally,” he said.

“Yet over the last several years the development community in Brisbane with the support and vision of Brisbane City Council and State Government has been challenging that idea, through innovation, sustainability, public realm, and design. And I think the industry nationally is now looking at Brisbane as setting the benchmark for others to follow.”
