‘Wandavision’ Director Matt Shakman On Playing With The Runtime Of The Series

WandaVision director Matt Shakman discussed playing around with the runtime of the Disney Plus series and being the first entry into Marvel’s Phase 4.

Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany, WandaVision is speeding its way into our homes on Friday and will take fans on a trip through sitcom history. The series will follow the sitcom model and that is also the case with its runtime. Like most sitcoms, WandaVision will have a runtime of around 30 minutes, but that doesn’t mean it will be short on surprises.

WandaVision will, of course, include a few fun nods to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe during its 30-minute duration and it seems like the cast and crew had a ton of fun playing around with the MCU. There have been theories that the last few episodes of WandaVision could be movie-length and based on the chatter we were wondering if the show’s runtime could be extended closer to its ending. We recently had the chance to ask WandaVision director Matt Shakman if the series could have an extended runtime in later episodes and he had the following to say.

“One of the things about WandaVision is that we played so much with form structure,” Shakman told Heroic Hollywood. “We have been given great permission and flexibility from Disney+ to play around. And definitely running times is one of the things we played with.”

Due to the ongoing pandemic, WandaVision will be our first taste of Phase 4 of the MCU and Shakman is pretty excited for fans to get a look at the series. “It’s an honor. As I mentioned, I’m such a big Marvel fan,” the director said. “To be playing around in the sandbox and helping to start this new phase is really exciting. And to be involved in launching Marvel Studios’ work on Disney+, especially with a show that is a love letter to the history of television, feels right.”

The series is being directed by Matt Shakman with Jac Schaeffer as the lead scribe, WandaVision will star Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch, Paul Bettany as The Vision, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, Randall Park as Agent Jimmy Woo, and Kathryn Hahn in an undisclosed role. The President of Marvel Studios has said that the series leads into Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
