Friday’s Euro 2021 results

England 0, Scotland 0

Well, that turned out to be a dud. A star-studded English team with attackers like Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling, Mason Mount, Phil Phoden and later Jack Grealish and Marcus Rashford, could not find a way through a defensively stout Scottish side.

There were only half-chances in this one, but the draw suits both teams well ahead of their respective group finales. Scotland would likely move on with a win at home in Hampden Park against Croatia, while England would go through with a win or draw against the Czech Republic. But if the English want to advance as the first-place team in their group, only a win will do.

Croatia 1, Czech Republic 1

Patrik Schick moved to the top of the Euro 2021 goal-scoring charts with a controversial penalty-kick goal, his third of the competition, as the Czech Republic picked up another point in a 1-1 draw against Croatia.

Schick converted the penalty kick after the referee ruled he was struck by a Dejan Lovren elbow in the first half. Croatia’s Ivan Perisic got the early second-half equalizer on a stunning finish.

The Czech team faces England next, but it will feel confident that four points will be enough to get to the next round. Croatia will need a win at all costs against Scotland if the 2018 World Cup finalists have any hope of advancing.

Sweden 1, Slovakia 0

A 77th-minute penalty kick by Emil Forsberg was all that Sweden needed to win its second group match against Slovakia, 1-0, putting itself in position to advance in the final group game against Poland.

Slovakia, which was looking to add to its points total after its opening win against Poland, played a conservative game and was clearly looking for the tie. But that plan blew up when Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka brought down Sweden forward Robin Quaison in the box with Forsberg converting the ensuing PK.

It was a well-deserved win for a Sweden side that ratcheted up the pressure in the second half with 21-year-old forward Alexander Isak creating multiple opportunities.
