‘Superman’ Director James Gunn Reveals Mysterious New ‘S’ Symbol

Superman director James Gunn has dropped a new mysterious new “S” symbol on Sunday via his social media accounts. Check it out in the embed below.

Gunn provided no context and sent fans buzzing with what the “S” reference could possibly mean?

Well, the answer is quite simple if you do a google image search. The “S” is in fact Superman’s first symbol which back in 1938 was a letter “S “with red and blue on a yellow police badge symbol that resembled a shield. That symbol was first changed a few times later in Action Comics #7.

This is also the first weekend that Action Comics #1 was released, back on April 18, 1938. Gunn recently celebrated the milestone with with Superman cast members David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan.  The following pictures captures the trio reading Superman comic books, highlighting their engagement with the source material.

“On this day in 1938 the first superhero entered our atmosphere via the imaginations of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster,” Gunn said on social media. “He gave us someone to believe in, not because of his great physical power, but because of his character and determination to do right no matter what. Happy #Superman Day to all of you! #UpUpandAway

Since Superman kicked off its production in February, James Gunn has been actively sharing updates and behind-the-scenes glimpses with fans via social media. On February 29, Gunn celebrated the start of filming with a post that not only confirmed the beginning of production but also unveiled the final title of the film, explicitly stating that “Legacy” would no longer serve as its subtitle.
