Spooky SZN: Move to Your Own Wicked Beat

As the crisp air of fall sets in and Halloween is here, it’s the perfect time to reflect on how we move through life and through fitness. Whether you’re the type to sprint into your workouts or take your time with a slow, deliberate pace, what truly matters is that you’re moving to your own beat. After all, no two bodies move the same way, and there’s no one-size-fits-all workout plan.

What Moves You?

What makes you feel alive, fulfilled, and accomplished?  Is it the energy boost you get after crushing a workout, or maybe the satisfaction of checking off a to-do list? No matter what drives you, it’s important to embrace your own pace, whether that means grocery shopping, taking a walk through the neighborhood, or hitting the gym.  Some people thrive on getting things done quickly, while others find fulfillment in a slower, more mindful rhythm.

Think about it like this:

  • Tackling tasks: Maybe you’re the type who spends hours perfecting yard work, while your friend would rather fly through chores like a speed machine.
  • Walking: Some people enjoy a slow stroll while savoring every step, while others are on a mission, and if you don’t move aside, they will run all over the people in front of them.
  • Driving: We’ve all been there, stuck behind the slowpoke in front of us who is probably on the phone or just not paying attention. You try to pass, yet to find yourself being cut off by a speedster, darting through traffic like it’s a race.

If you find yourself scrolling through different workouts, take note that you are being exposed o a wide range of exercises with varying paces and difficulties.  Moving at a pace that feels right for you is key to staying motivated and seeing results. What might feel fast to one person could be slow to another and vice versa… and that’s totally fine! The point is, there’s no right or wrong way to move, as long as you’re moving!  The key is listening to your body and tuning in to your own goals.

Set Your Pace, Raise the Bar

As a fitness professional with over 30 years of experience, I can tell you one thing: the best workouts are the ones that challenge you but don’t break you. Knowing your limits allows you to push them safely, and that’s where the magic happens. It’s important to listen to your body, to recognize when it’s time to push harder and when it’s time to scale back.

If you’re working out on your own, there’s plenty of great information and workout plans out there to follow. While they may offer great suggestions, it’s crucial to ensure they’re right for your fitness level and that you’re performing them correctly to get the best results.

So remember, workouts should have flexibility, freedom to adjust, and room to progress or regress. Trying to keep up with someone else’s pace can leave you feeling frustrated, discouraged, or even injured. So always return to what works for you because that’s where true progress happens, and you can raise your bar!
