This Bridgewater home is more than meet the eye and offers a tranquil escape in the heart of the Adelaide Hills.

David and Alison Croser bought the home in June 2018, attracted by its unique character in that it is the less common Indian bungalow, rather than the typical Australian bungalow.

“It’s not like any other house we’d seen,” Mr Croser says. “We were looking for a house in the hills surrounded by gardens – the house is in the middle of the block and, sitting on the hillside, it looks down over the oval one way and down towards the Bridgewater Mill to the other side – so it has 180-degrees of hillside, rather than just a front. We grew up here and then went to the Northern Territory for a number of years but then moved back here, specifically to the Hills because there’s no better place than the Adelaide Hills for experiencing all the seasons.”

The home features four bedrooms, and is largely original, aside from the more recent addition of a more contemporary bathroom, kitchen and conservatory. Mr Croser said the home had been the perfect place to spend the recent coronavirus lockdown.

“Two of our children came back from Melbourne for lockdown and it was perfect – to us it was a great place to be together as a family,” Mr Croser says. “We had a beautiful warm fireplace, views out to the garden and it’s in close proximity to everything. We felt no restriction or encumbrance at all. The location is great too because there are walking trails and hiking trails and we can go to Aldgate and Stirling – we’re really quite busy on the weekends.”

Mr Croser said the home’s Indian bungalow design allowed for easy family entertaining.

“It has a big central room with a high ceiling with eight doors opening to rooms which have doors that open the outside of the house so you can open up the doors and capture all of those breezes,” he says. “It would be perfect for a family or an older couple looking for something pretty with gardens.”

The couple are onto the next chapter of their lives in a house in nearby Stirling. “We’re Hills converts now,” Mr Croser says.
