See Tom Cruise Replace Robert Downey Jr. As Iron Man In ‘Doctor Strange 2’

A new concept design shows Tom Cruise suited up as the Superior Iron Man, replacing Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark for Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

At this point, just about every Marvel character who has ever appeared on the big screen has been rumored to return in Sam Raimi’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. One name that keeps cropping up is Tony Stark, although not as audiences know him.

While Multiverse of Madness will introduce variants of Marvel characters from across multiple alternate realities, Robert Downey Jr. is unlikely to suit up as Iron Man again, following his emotional final bow in Avengers: Endgame. However, many fans are expecting to see a version of the character played by Tom Cruise in the Doctor Strange sequel, with the prevailing rumor suggesting that the actor will appear as the character’s villainous ‘Superior Iron Man’ persona from the comics.

While there has been no official confirmation of Tom Cruise’s involvement in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness from Marvel Studios, the rumors have proven persistent. Cruise was originally in the running to play the role of Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man, before Robert Downey Jr. was ultimately cast. The alternate realities of the multiverse, however, offer a perfect opportunity to see what Cruise could have looked like as the legendary Marvel hero. Casting Cruise as the Superior Iron Man would both allow him to be an antagonistic force in the narrative and let audiences see a distinct version of Iron Man, rather than just watching Cruise fill in for Downey Jr.

A stunning concept design by artist “spdrmnkyxxiii” on Instagram showscases how Tom Cruise could look like as Superior Iron Man. You can check out the artwork below.

In the comics, the Superior Iron Man was born during the Axis event, which saw the morality of Marvel’s heroes and villains reversed via magic. Although the spell was eventually undone, the evil version of Tony Stark was able to utilize his incredible intellect to preserve himself. Interestingly, the design above hints at Tom Cruise’s version of the character making use of the Infinity Stones. This could suggest that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness‘s Superior Iron Man is born of an alternate ending to Avengers: Endgame, which saw Tony using the stones to defeat Thanos at the cost of his own life.

Here is the synopsis for the Doctor Strange sequel:

The MCU unlocks the Multiverse and pushes its boundaries further than ever before. Journey into the unknown with Doctor Strange, who, with the help of mystical allies both old and new, traverses the mind-bending and dangerous alternate realities of the Multiverse to confront a mysterious new adversary.

Directed by Sam Raimi from a script written by Michael Waldron, the Marvel movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, with Michael Stuhlbarg, Rachel McAdams, and Patrick Stewart.
