Seaside sales: Auctions in Mornington Peninsula, Point Lonsdale headline weekend

Seaside sales dominated the first major auction weekend in 2021, as Melburnians flocked to the coast to secure a slice of prized waterfront.

Blairgowrie hosted more auctions than any other suburb on Saturday, including a family heirloom at 9 Madeleine Street that changed hands for the first time in more than 40 years.

Rayner Property Group director Michelle Rayner said the idyllic beach shack sold $100,000 above the top end of the price guide for $1.17m after back-and-forth bidding from two determined buyers.

9 Madeleine Street, Blairgowrie was one of the coastal sales on Saturday.

The beach house sold for $1.17m.

The hammer fell to a Melbourne family looking to buy a holiday home, she said.

“A lot of buyers missed out because the bidding started so strongly,” Ms Rayner said.

“But there are so many buyers out there cashed up and ready to go.”

There were two determined bidders for the property.

Point Lonsdale vendors made a windfall from their 1960s classic at 5 Qu’appelle Street, which sold for $1.91m at a speedy auction in front of a huge crowd.

The impressive sale soared way above the modest $42,000 paid for the property in the 1970s, according to CoreLogic.

Kerleys Coastal Real Estate director Damian Cayzer would not comment on the sale but said at auction that the 725sq m block was an “absolutely beautiful property in a classic Point Lonsdale location”.

21 Second Avenue, Rosebud attracted seven bidders.

Another massive result was recorded for a Rosebud investment property at 21 Second Avenue, which soared above its $470,000-$495,000 price guide.

Barry Plant Rosebud auctioneer Paul Cunnington said seven bidders pushed the property $75,000 above reserve to $605,000.

“The buyers are from Melbourne and they’re going to keep the existing tenant in there and use it as a holiday home in the future.”
