Sam Raimi Reveals Heartfelt Reason Why He Directed First ‘Spider-Man’ Film

The Spider-Man director also opened up about all of those memes.

Sam Raimi recently explained why he directed the first Spider-Man film and addressed all of the trilogy’s memes.

The Spider-Man franchise has gone through several reinventions in the last 20 years, but it all began with Sam Raimi’s film in 2002. When Spider-Man came out, it was a phenomenon that propelled the popularity of comic book movies. The love of Raimi’s trilogy is also still felt today with all the memes circulating the internet and the desire to see Tobey Maguire return.

There isn’t confirmation from Sony that Tobey Maguire will suit up as Spider-Man again for Tom Holland’s film, but what we do know is that Sam Raimi is back in the Marvel universe as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Production on the Marvel Studios film is underway, but the director is also doing press for The Unholy since he is a producer on the project. Raimi recently participated in a Reddit AMA to promote The Unholy, where he was asked by a user how he made one of their favorite trilogies of all-time with the Spider-Man films:

“I directed the first Spider-Man film because I was such a huge fan of Stan Lee’s brilliant character. Peter Parker and Spider-Man were an important part of my teenage years. I thought it was very moving how much he sacrificed for others. How hard he worked to protect innocent people. And all the while had to take care of his Aunt May and do his homework to boot. His self sacrifice resonated with me. He was truly a good person. We can identify with Characters in a comprehensible story. Stories of heroes, like Peter Parker, remind us of what we are capable of. Maybe you’re one of those people that like to be reminded of the good you are capable of. Now get out there and do something about it.”

Sam Raimi also took the time to address all of those Spider-Man memes from his films that have made waves on the internet over the years:

“Those memes are hysterically funny. And it’s so cool to see that many people liked the films.”
