The Redfern house price record has been smashed, with a terrace designed by one of Australia’s most famous architects selling for an extraordinary price.

The Luigi Rosselli-designed residence at 16 Thurlow St had a price guide of $4.5m via Maclay Longhurst of BresicWhitney, but it’s sold for just under $5m.

“The buyer loved the architectural appeal,” says Longhurst. “It really had its own identity.”

He confirmed the purchaser was a young professional woman upgrading from a smaller home in Redfern, though he said “heaps” of young families, priced out of other parts of the east, were now pouncing on bigger homes in the once down-at-heel suburb.

Redfern’s price records are now being broken regularly.

The previous record was $4.65m — set by Longhurst late last month — for a terrace at 108 Buckingham St.

And it’s well known in the Thurlow St neighbourhood that another house has sold for $4.6m recently to a Surry Hills family who have returned from several years working in New York.

No. 16 last traded (pre-renovation) for $1.5m seven years ago.

The buyers (now vendors) of the 5m wide house on the 168 sqm block were Scott Inness and Abby Summerton of Kinn Construction, the builders who often work with Rosselli.

Their stunning designer transformation, completed just two years ago, includes a lower-level rumpus room, home office, laundry and powder room in the basement.

Built over four levels and with its north-facing rear yard, there’s no doubting the property’s architectural credentials.

But some families may have been slightly discouraged by the master bedroom not having an ensuite. And the kitchen, while beautiful, may have been on the smaller side for a family.

The garage has rear-lane access to Thurlow Lane.

It had a garage for one car, with a studio above, accessed via Thurlow Lane.

Longhurst has also just sold 410 Moore Park Rd, Paddington for $9m – a street record and a south Paddington record – in five days.

Owned by lawyer Jason Downing and his director wife Amanda Linott, the guide was $7.5m.
