Private island on Queensland’s Great Barrier Reef is pure lockdown paradise
If you are locked down in Sydney right now, the idea of moving to your own private island is probably more enticing than ever.
It might surprise you, however, to find out that you could actually own one for less than it costs to have a house in many prestige parts of Sydney, including the eastern suburbs, north shore and even parts of the northern beaches.

Mammoth price for Sydney home after 14-day bidding war
Meet Victor Island, 3.13ha of private paradise at the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef.
Surrounded by crystal clear waters that are home to turtles, dolphins and a myriad of fish and birds, the island is like something off the front of a postcard.
It has been home for Meg and Paul Sullivan for about six years, said Deborah Cullen, of Cullen Royle Property Purveyors. She is marketing the property with Pat O’Driscoll, of Knight Frank Rockhampton.
“This is the most beautiful and idyllic lifestyle,” Ms Cullen said.
“You feel like you are 100 miles from anywhere and all you can hear is the water lapping and the birds.
“It’s that total escapism that we all dream of but never get to do.”
They have set a price guide of $3.95 million for this the property. To put that in perspective, consider the median house sale prices of some of Sydney’s prestige suburbs, like Whale Beach, on the northern beaches ($6.8 million); Tamarama in the eastern suburbs ($9.6 million); or Cremorne Point, on the north shore ($6 million).
Ms Cullen said Victor Island was attracting plenty of interest from Sydney and Melbourne buyers. She said the sale had initially been set as an expressions of interest campaign closing in early July, but they had decided to remove that given the constraints for buyers due to Covid lockdowns and travel restrictions.
The property has endless potential – either as an exclusive permanent home or a bed and breakfast business (there is a licence in place), a holiday home or a combination of all three.
It includes a renovated four-bedroom home, caretakers cottage, desalination plant to ensure fresh water, and solar farm with back-up generator.

The island is a 20-minute boat ride from Hay Point Marina in Mackay, which is a 2.5-hour flight from Sydney. Ms Cullen said the current owners had used the island as a permanent residence, and were selling to move closer to their grandchildren.
