Palm Springs style Highton home beats reserve by almost $400K

119-121 Rivergum Drive, Highton sold for a big price at auction on Saturday.

A luxury Palm Springs-inspired home in one of Highton’s premium streets has sold almost $400,000 over reserve at auction.

Competition from four bidders drove the big $1.99m sale of the modern, four-bedroom, pavilion-style house at 191-121 Rivergum Drive.

Panoramic vistas across the valley to the You Yangs are a standout feature of the elevated 1710sq m property and a big crowd turned out on Saturday to experience first-hand the dramatic views of storms rolling by.

Victoria’s hardest to crack property markets

The view was centre stage as Whitford, Newtown director John Moran called the auction.

The buyer embrace after securing the home.

Whitford, Newtown agent John Moran said a local buyer in the market for a single-level family home outbid two other locals and an international buyer wanting to return to Australia after years working overseas.

“It was a beautiful home but we were not expecting anything like that,” Mr Moran said.

“The reserve was around $1.6m and the first bid was bang on that.

“It just shows the strength of the market.”

What a view for entertaining.

Whitford, Newtown director John Moran had four bidders.

The vendors built the house less than three years ago, engaging Topic Builders to bring their Palms Springs/Hollywood Hills vision to life.

The understated L-shaped floorplan is designed to maximise views from the two living zones and the main bedroom suite.

Sliding doors off the kitchen, dining and lounge area link to a covered patio and lush lawn overlooking the valley.

The understated facade ensures privacy.

The gas fire is a focal point.

Mr Moran said another luxury home across the road had achieved a $2m sale but it had a pool and sports field, whereas this property did not.

But he said the beauty of the location on the lower side of the street was the views could never be built out and there were no overlooking neighbours.

“You can watch the weather roll in, you can watch everything … it’s a beautiful spot with a great outlook,” he said.
