One of Daylesford’s most grand homes for sale

The incredible property is within the heart of Daylesford.

A sprawling country residence originally built for a Daylesford mayor has graced the market.

Formal parklike gardens, leadlight windows and a restored period residence, which dates to 1896, fill the estate with historical glamour.

McQueen director Kim McQueen said the four-bedroom property at 88 West Street was “one of Daylesford’s grandest homes”.

The impressive estate.

Lush gardens welcome you to the home.

Leadlight windows provide period flourishes.

“It’s been really sympathetically restored over the years, always keeping in mind the original features of the home,” Ms McQueen said.

Renovations maintain Victorian features including original open fireplaces and pine flooring, but windows have been double-glazed and updates to the kitchen have been added.

Ms McQueen said the 0.44ha block was one of only a few houses of that size “in the heart” of Daylesford.

“It’s absolutely stunning and incredibly private,” Ms McQueen said.

“The estate is surrounded by a towering hedge, and once you go through the gates, it’s like entering another world.”

Lush lawns, garden paths, flowerbeds, cherry and ash trees are all watered via an automated irrigation system fed from a bore, so the buyers have the opportunity to “lock up and leave” the property at any time.

There’s also a bocce court, and an extensive vegetable garden with pear, apricot, quince, plum and nectarine trees, in addition to an enclosed hothouse.

“The beautiful veranda runs across three sides of the home and it has that quintessential Daylesford feel,” Ms McQueen said.

There’s also a historic barn on the property.

She said the owners had worked with heritage consultants to restore the historic barn to create space for a home office, games room, gym or secondary accommodation.

A double carport, two 25,000L water tanks and an underground wine cellar were other highlights.

Ms McQueen said there were a number of “hidden gems” across Daylesford and the surrounding areas, which had become “increasingly popular”.

The space could be used as a gym or secondary accommodation.

A dream tree-change.

“We’ve had a number of sales over the last six months in the $2m range for these sorts of beautiful trophy homes,” she said. “I’ve seen a 20-30 per cent increase in pricing over the last 12 months. With the proximity to Melbourne and access on the freeway, properties here are a great investment.”
