Mitcham home’s million-dollar sale a top deal in more ways than one
Adelaide’s top property sale recorded in the past week has also smashed its inner-southern suburbs street’s record.
The Mitcham house at 3 Hoggs Road fetched $1.71 million at auction – $110,000 more than the street’s previous record, which was set by the house at No. 4A in November last year.
According to CoreLogic, it was the top sale recorded across South Australia in the past week.
Harcourts Pilgrim director Brett Pilgrim, who sold the four-bedroom house with Michael Wood, said it hit the market on Christmas Eve and attracted a lot of attention over the festive period.
At the first open home held on the Boxing Day public holiday, Mr Pilgrim said 42 groups inspected the residence.
“It got a lot of interstate inquiries – nearly 40 per cent of inquiries on it were from interstate,” he said.
“The current owner is an architect and it sold to an architect – architects seemed to love the design of the home and its quirkiness.”
Designed by Ian Hannaford in 1969, the house has a unique floorplan.
Its main living areas are on the top floor and most of its bedrooms are downstairs, while the pool is in the front yard.

Property records show it last sold in 2012 for $520,000.
Mr Pilgrim said a combination of the hot market and increased popularity of older unique homes were making properties in the area sell for such high prices, and would likely continue to do so.
“I find from Mitcham through to Springfield through to Urrbrae, there are lots of those types of homes back in vogue at the moment,” he said.
“For this buyer it was the property, they weren’t looking in Mitcham at all.”
