Melbourne auctions: Glenroy, Cheltenham sales smash reserves

13 Salisbury Street, Glenroy smashed its reserve in a competitive weekend auction.

A family said a bittersweet goodbye to their beloved Glenroy home after years of renovations in favour of a new pad just a suburb away.

Vendors Bronwyn and Heath Collister said they were sad to leave to the three-bedroom property they’d called home for almost a decade, but had already upsized their family of four to a property in Oak Park.

A crowd watched on as six determined parties fought it out for their character-filled home at 13 Salisbury Street, pushing the sale well past its $880,000 reserve to a whopping $951,000.

“A lot of big moments have happened here,” Mr Collister said.

“We were married after buying it and we bought both our kids home here after they were born.”

“We’ve put a lot of sweat and work into it too,” Mrs Collister said.

When the couple first bought the house it was painted a retro pink and lime green before they updated it over the years, adding in new floors and working extensively on the gardens.

The auction attracted a wide range of family buyers.

The hammer fell to a couple from Geelong who swooped in to bid within the final moments of the auction, after most parties had already bowed out of the bidding war.

Buyers Annu and Sid said they were excited to relocate to the northern suburb to live near family in Essendon, after being “priced out” of other areas closer to the CBD.

Ray White Glenroy’s Sebastian Rello said it was the property’s two living rooms and spacious backyard that helped seal the deal for the “highly-contested” property.

The vendors said the bathroom is one of the things they’ll miss at their new home.

In Cheltenham, a two-bedroom home at 33 Gillman Street also smashed its initial $950,000-$960,000 price hopes after competitive bidding pushed the sale to $1.122m.

McGrath Sandringham principal Fran Harkin said a decision was made to bring the auction forward by a fortnight after receiving overwhelmingly strong interest.

“It’s a humble home with a big heart and the location was a real drawcard,” Ms Harkin said.

The buyers were a young couple who had family bid on their behalf while they were in Tasmania at the time of the auction.

33 Gillman Street, Cheltenham was another strong auction on Saturday.

“We had the buyer on FaceTime and she was just in tears,” Ms Harkin said.

“It was actually the vendors first home too so they were delighted to pass it on to other first-home buyers.”
