A buyer who took a risk bidding on two online auctions at once scored the keys to a Mernda family home.

The four-bedroom house at 36 Renaissance Boulevard had a slow start to its virtual sale, before it climbed past the $740,00 reserve, to sell for $791,000.

Ray White Mernda principal John Metaxas said the buyer was initially “in two minds” about registering to bid on the property.

“He had only seen it right before they locked us down, and he only registered the morning of,” Mr Metaxas said.

“He was actually bidding on another property at the same time in Doreen, and I said to him to be careful, because if they both go on the market you’ll be stuck with them both.”

“The buyer was renting in Hawthorn, so now rather than paying someone else mortgage they are happy to be paying their own.”

Mr Metaxas said he was one of many out-of-area buyers who had flocked to Mernda for its affordability and growing amenities, including the local train station, schools and new developments.

“More people are coming down this way because they have a direct line with city when they do need to travel back there,” he added.

Vendors Emily and Jarryd Watkins were “really happy” to offload their home of seven years as they had already upsized their family of four to a larger residence.

But the move was bittersweet, as it meant saying goodbye to their “baby” that the high school sweethearts built when they were just 22-years-old.

“We met when we were 17, so after we had a bit of savings we bought the land and built here. It’s been like our baby,” Mrs Watkins said.

“We got married had both of our kids while living here.”

The property was built less than a decade ago.

It features a modern kitchen with a walk-in butler’s pantry and open-plan living area and outdoor deck, plus a private theatre room.

Mrs Watkins said lockdown had “put a bit of a spanner” in their auction plans, but that they were grateful to make the most of the surging demand amid lockdown.
