What we know about the Masters of the Universe movie

Chris Butler (ParaNorman), who collaborated with director Travis Knight on Laika’s upcoming Wildwood, has penned the latest draft of the screenplay for the long-awaited Masters of the Universe movie. The script builds on earlier work by David Callaham and Aaron and Adam Nee. Produced by Escape Artists and Mattel Films, the project continues to take shape under Knight’s direction, marking his return to live-action filmmaking following 2018’s Bumblebee.

While plot details remain tightly guarded, Masters of the Universe is set for an exclusive theatrical release on June 5, 2026. The film aims to reimagine the classic Mattel franchise for a new generation, bringing the iconic battle for Eternia to life with a star-studded cast and visionary filmmaking team.

Based on the Mattel franchise of the same name, Masters of the Universe centers on the conflict between He-Man, the secret identity of Prince Adam, and the villainous sorcerer Skeletor on the planet Eternia. The franchise has previously spawned an animated TV series that ran from 1983 to 1985 and a 1987 live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren.
