Marvell’s Cora Lam Named to Silicon Valley Business Journal Class of 2022 Women of Influence
Marvell is deeply committed to elevating women in STEM and supporting female engineers and entrepreneurs in their efforts to succeed in the tech industry. That’s why we are so proud to announce that Marvell team member Cora Lam has been named to the Silicon Valley Business Journal Women of Influence Class of 2022 for her successes and commitments in both workplace and community services.
Throughout the past 21 years, Marvell has been the nourishing ground to foster Cora’s professional development. With Cora’s dedication, creativity, and excellence in execution, she steadily progressed from a junior engineer to her now current position as Senior Principal Engineer in the Central Engineering group.
For the last five years, Cora also surprisingly discovered her two greatest passions within Marvell – Women in STEM and wellness. She believes you don’t need to be a CEO to promote women in STEM, instead, you just need to be your authentic self, utilizing motivation, passion, and compassion to empower others. To Cora, having genuine compassion for others without any agenda is the source of true wellness.
Despite Cora’s busy work schedule, Cora is one of the leaders and key volunteers for the Women at Marvell (WAM) initiative since its establishment in 2017. By organizing events such as International Women’s Day celebrations, speaker series, and panel discussions, WAM aims to inspire and foster a culture of diversity, gender equality and inclusion within Marvell.
Through a WAM meeting in 2018, Cora first heard about TechWomen (TW), an initiative from the U.S. Department of State that annually brings over 100 women Emerging Leaders (ELs) in STEM from 20+ countries in Africa, Central and South Asia, and the Middle East to the San Francisco Bay Area for a five-week intensive professional mentorship and networking program. For Cora, TW was like “love at first sight”, and she became Marvell’s first and only TW mentor in 2018.
TW18 was a very fulfilling, rewarding and life-changing experience for Cora and she endeavored to build a Marvell TW community. After three years of Cora’s relentless pitching of TW within Marvell, for the spring 2022 TW Cohort, Cora successfully facilitated Marvell’s participation in TW as a hosting company for two ELs from Libya and recruited five more co-workers to serve as TW mentors.
For the past four years, collaborating with other TW mentors, Cora has organized and volunteered at various cultural and professional events to empower, connect and support over 150 ELs. During these cultural exchanges, Cora was deeply touched by the joy, freedom and gratitude expressed by ELs. She noted that they seemed to have somehow forgotten all the inequalities and challenges they face in their home countries. This year, besides conducting cultural events, Cora also served as a Professional Mentor for Libya’s EL – Safa Buzgeia, to help her grow and thrive professionally. Cora’s devotion is inspiring. Before Safa left Marvell, she told Cora: “Thanks You Cora for what you have done for me. You are the only one, besides my mum, really care about my career, at the same time whether I’m smiling”.
Being part of TW allows Cora to pass on her skills and experiences to other women in countries around the world, help them to further inspire girls and women in local communities, to pursue STEM and in turn bring meaningful changes to their home countries.
In 2018, Cora was introduced to Bodhi Meditation, a health and wellness non-profit organization founded in 1991 with over 30 centers worldwide, at Marvell’s Fitness Center. Bodhi has been in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2008 and has helped over 20,000 people to regain a healthy, happy, and fulfilling life. As one of the beneficiaries of Bodhi’s effective based meditation methods and compassion-based teachings, Cora became an active volunteer in Bodhi’s Bailan Milpitas Center, which is endorsed by the city of Milpitas since 2014. During 2019, Cora was the co-lead of weekly meditation class and morning meditation practice in Marvell’s Fitness Center. When the pandemic struck, Cora was one of the key contributors to bringing Bailan Milpitas Center services to a virtual online platform to ensure uninterrupted service to the community.
Cora once mentioned in a “What Makes Marvell” interview series that: “I think it is my fate to be with Marvell. I have a strong sense of belonging to the company, not only as a place to work but as a place for me to grow. “
