Kitchn’s Favorite Containers Now Come in Glass — And I’m Even Deeper in Love

My family — like, I’m sure, a lot of you — has been doing a lot of cooking this past year. And the things in our kitchen that work for us and those that don’t have made themselves abundantly clear. Like, for example, our food storage containers.

In the past, I’d toss a pack of cheap, plastic containers in my cart every time I found myself in the food storage aisle at Target. Once home, it would be out with the old and in with the new. I’d done this for years and, for some reason, never really thought about how unhappy I was with what I kept purchasing. I knew it was wasteful (even though I’d find alternative uses for the old containers in other parts of the house), but it was what it was.

But then I found out about the Rubbermaid Brilliance plastic containers. They’re featured on this Kitchn Essentials list. And, in fact, everyone at The Kitchn loves them. I had to have them. Which is why I got very excited when I learned that these containers now come in glass versions.

My husband had been persistently asking for glass containers for his lunches. (Because they’re more sustainable and just an all-around better option than plastic.) These were perfect. Their tops are made from plastic, which cuts down on their total weight, making them easier to transport, but the bottoms are glass. They’re also leakproof, so my husband could finally (finally!) bring in soup for lunch — his favorite.

These containers are also dishwasher-safe, oven-safe (up to 450°F), BPA-free, and microwave-safe and have vented lids for splatter-resistant microwaving. If those tidbits aren’t enough to get you excited, let me share with you a few more reasons why I love them.

1. They’re super high-quality.

I’ve always been thrifty, but this year I finally learned the importance of investing in quality products. Unlike our old, cheap plastic containers, these glass ones are actually substantial. They don’t leak. They don’t retain smells or stain. And they are, in my opinion, worth the investment.

2. They come in more than one size.

I’ve found the larger (4.7-cup) ones to be ideal for storing leftovers, as well as baking smaller meals like mac and cheese for two. I also love to cook brownies in them, dividing the batch between two containers. Once baked, one stays out and one goes in the freezer! The smaller (3.2-cup) containers are great for lunches and storing chopped veggies.

3. They’re simple to store.

Lastly, and probably most importantly: These containers stack perfectly inside one another, which makes for easy storage. Their lids are all the same size, too, so there’s no need to fumble around looking for the right one. And if you already have the plastic Rubbermaid Brilliance containers, the lids will fit the same-sized glass containers. Design that makes your life simpler is the best kind of design!
