James Gunn Explains Why ‘Batman: The Brave And The Bold’ Is Taking So Long
Is Batman: The Brave And The Bold in trouble? James Gunn gives an update on why some projects in the DC Universe may take longer than some fans hoped.
It’s no exaggeration to say that Batman: The Brave and The Bold is one of the most anticipated projects for the DC Universe. It’s set to start a whole new era for the Caped Crusader, likely one tonally polar to the grounded and gritty world of The Batman. However, as months have gone on, James Gunn has remained tight lipped about the film.
This has led many to worry that Batman: The Brave And The Bold has ran into some catastrophic production stranglehold that has keep James Gunn from speaking on the project. Luckily, it seems the fears of fans have been exaggerated. When speaking on why the film hasn’t gotten an update, James Gunn clarified his approach to greenlighting projects in the DC Universe.
“There’s no set timeline for anything,” Gunn explained in a recent interview with Collider. “The one thing that I’ve tried to make clear to people from the beginning, in the way that I hope we’re different, is that everything in DC is going to be based on the writers. Until we have a screenplay that I’m totally happy with, that movie is not going to get made, no matter what it is.”
“So, we have been really fortunate with some screenplays. You know, Supergirl came in and just, wow Ana [Nogueria] did such an amazing job, the Lanterns pilot came in, and now the whole Lanterns series came in, and it’s like ‘Wow that’s wonderful, wonderful work.’ And there’s a couple of other things that people don’t know about, a couple of movies and TV shows that are greenlit or near greenlit.”
“But it’s going to be based always on that, on the story, because at the end of the day if we’re happy with the story that we’re telling, that’s what matters most. And once The Brave and the Bold gets to that point, then we’ll make the movie. ”
When Will Batman Appear In The DC Universe?
It’s good to hear that James Gunn is taking a story-first approach with the DC Universe, especially given how many massive franchises have seemingly been kept alive solely by a treadmill of executive meddling. While this sadly means that Batman: The Brave and The Bold is likely years away, at the earliest, it doesn’t mean that the character’s influence won’t be felt before his debut.
It’s been confirmed that Clayface, a popular Batman villain, will be appearing in Creature Commandos. James Gunn has also already made quite a few nods to the character within the DC Universe, with Superman set photos featuring an Easter Egg alluding to one of the most underrated Robins. So while Batman: The Brave and The Bold may be far down the line, fans will certainly have their fill of the character until then.
