The 2024/25 UEFA Champions League promises to be one for the history books, as the first of the new-age expanded and reorganized competition.
The world’s most famous and visible club competition has expanded to 36 teams and reshuffled the old group stage into what’s been dubbed the “league phase,” where teams will play eight matches against randomly selected opponents and placed into a full table.
All clubs will be thrown into the mixer to compete against one another, and there are some premium matchups on the schedule as a result.
With the league phase now behind us, the focus shifts to the knockout playoff rounds, where teams will battle for a spot in the Round of 16. They will join the ranks of Liverpool, Inter Milan, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Lille, and Aston Villa, who have already secured qualification. Powerhouses such as Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Real Madrid, PSG, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund are expected to advance, though fans may be in for some surprises.
All eyes will be on Tuesday’s marquee matchup between Manchester City and Real Madrid, as the two former Champions League winners lock horns. Meanwhile, Juventus will host PSV, PSG will travel to Brest in an all-Ligue 1 encounter, and Sporting Lisbon will play host to Borussia Dortmund.
On Wednesday, the action continues with Bayern Munich traveling to Scotland to face Brendan Rodger’s Celtic, while AC Milan striker Santiago Jimenez is set for an early reunion with his former club, Feyenoord.
