Griffith, Canberra ‘Black House’ stuns buyers

Melding country charm with city chic, this landmark Griffith residence has been inspired by a rural homestead with all the modern touches.

Known as “The Black House” to locals, the 67 Monaro Crescent property was constructed last year and is the collaborative handiwork of the owners and Bowral-based Martin O’Toole Architects.

The property is known locally as “The Black House”.

“The style of this home is an absolute knockout,” said selling agent Louise Harget from Belle Property Canberra.

“Everyone knows it. It’s known as ‘The Black House’ because it’s just so different for Canberra.

“The owners tried to source an architect around here but couldn’t find one that aligned with what they wanted. They wanted that country feel so they went to Bowral and basically outsourced it.

“The design is the vision of the owner, and it’s all her own styling. It’s just magic.”

Set on a 934sqm landholding, the generously proportioned property spans four bedrooms and three bathrooms, with incredible features including vaulted, cathedral ceilings, European oak floorboards, a feature fireplace, and a bank of French doors that open out to the alfresco.

Outside, there is a 10m swimming pool surrounded by travertine paving, with a convenient outdoor toilet and shower nearby.

That’s all topped off with a comprehensive alfresco kitchen with external aluminium shutters, a built-in barbecue, gas cooktop, electric oven, and a drinks fridge.
Additional outdoor features include a fire pit, 5000L rainwater tank, and secure entry gates that are operational through the remote control, internal intercom and smartphone app.

Ms Harget said several offers had been made since the property hit the market last week.

“It’s too good a house not to put it to market so we’ll be continuing with our plan to go to auction,” Ms Harget said.

“We sold the house directly across the road for $3.5 million off market about 12 months ago.

“This one is really pretty but super easy care as well. The bedrooms are massive, there is storage everywhere. It’s just a functional house for a big family.”

The property is scheduled to go to auction on 2 December at 6pm.
