It’s been a much loved family home for the past 12 years, and now former Port Adelaide Power star Darryl Wakelin and his wife – Endota Spas owner Karmen – are selling their Unley home to embark upon a new project.
The couple bought the 55 Hughes St home in 2008, about nine months after he retired from professional football.
“We’d always lived by the beach near Grange and Tennyson, and when it came up we put in an offer and got it,” Mr Wakelin said.
“It was a new life for us because everything at until that point had been associated with either going to Alberton, AAMI Stadium or the airport.
“We never really knew this side of town, but we’ve loved it here, particularly a linear park eco trail behind our home – that’s been great for the kids, and there are some fantastic schools nearby too.”
The couple have since renovated the home throughout, transforming it into a fantastic family home and a great entertainer.
“It was virtually a 1910 symmetrical villa that had been patched up a bit over its journey but was still relatively untouched,” Mr Wakelin said.
“We stripped it bare and put an extension off the back and have done a huge amount of structural work to it.
“We did everything to it – landscaping, pool, alfresco area and a courtyard.

“It’s perfect for a young family, and it’s really like a retreat.”
Mr Wakelin, who manages seven retail pharmacies including Alberton Pharmacy, said the family will now move onto their next renovation project and forever home – a gentleman’s bungalow they recently purchased in Millswood.
“It’s going to be really hard to leave – there’s been a few tears in the household, but we know the time’s right,” he said.
The five-bedroom, two-bathroom home on a 1040sqm block hits the market next week through Luke Holden and Alistair Loudon of Ouwens Casserly.
