Dream rental: warehouse conversion has unique nautical-themed design

Fitzroy rentals come in a variety of architectural styles, from old Victorian terrace houses to modern new builds, but it’s not often a warehouse conversion with a nautical theme comes onto the market.

Formerly a short-term rental, 372 Gore Street is located in the heart of Fitzroy with three bedrooms, two bathrooms and two car spaces, along with some epic outdoor entertaining areas.

Hollie-Jayne Fielding, senior property manager at Jellis Craig Inner North, said when it was a short-term rental, the property was regularly leased out to bands who would use it while they were in town recording. But with closed borders and fewer visitors, the owners decided to find more permanent tenants.

The architecture of the rental resembles a tall ship featuring high ceilings, timber joinery and a spiral staircase that is made to feel like being at the top of a mast.

It’s the nautical theme of the home that Ms Fielding says makes it stand out.

“Definitely the nautical theme is what I think makes this rental so unique – it’s not something we have often on the market,” she said.

Exposed brick walls are a key feature of the living area, which also hosts a large open-plan kitchen.

At the rear of the ground level are two bedrooms; one includes a staircase to a mezzanine level, which would be ideal for a work-from-home space or a hideaway for binge watching TV.

Upstairs on another mezzanine level is the master bedroom with ensuite, which comes with a sunken bath and skylight.

One of the biggest wow-factors of the house is a staircase from the master bedroom, which leads to a private rooftop area with views of the cityscape.

Ms Fielding said despite Melbourne’s current lockdown, enquiries on the rental have been consistent.

“We did have a bit of hesitation putting it up during lockdown, but that definitely hasn’t slowed anyone down from making enquiries,” she explained.

“It [interest] is mostly from couples who are full-time workers, and a lot from people working in the city and who have lived in the city previously, but are wanting to come to Fitzroy to get that beautiful view.”

Gore Street is just around the corner from Smith Street, which was voted the coolest street in the world by TimeOut this year. It has long been a desired street among renters in Melbourne who enjoy being within walking distance of some of the best food, culture and nightlife the city has to offer.

While lockdown 6.0 is currently underway in Melbourne, community spirit in the Fitzroy area remains high with local cafes, bars and restaurants offering takeaway options.

The price of the rental is $1300 per week and while the furniture and art within the home give the space a funky edge, there is the option of having it unfurnished for $1200 per week.
