David Yates Plans To Direct More ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Films
Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts director David Yates reportedly plans to helm two more films in the franchise following Newt Scamander.
Although the critical reception to the Fantastic Beasts films has been mixed (to say the least) the series has at least been financially successful – with Warner Bros. eyeing more chapters after Fantastic Beasts 3. And in a new interview with Collider, Katherine Waterson revealed that director David Yates is interested in helming the next two films in the series – explaining that he’s worked with J.K. Rowling for a number of years now.
“I think he is meant to direct them all. I think it’s very interesting. He’s worked very closely with J.K. Rowling for a long time and very few people have access to her because she’s quite insulated and so I can’t really imagine how it could work any other way frankly.”
Katherine Waterson also touched on being unsure about signing on for multiple films in the franchise, explaining that it’s a huge commitment given how much of the year these films take up. Waterson also noted that working on the Fantastic Beasts set with likeminded individuals like David Yates helps make the process a lot easier. The next film will see Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen replace Johnny Depp as the villainous Gellert Grindelwald following Depp’s recent legal troubles. Take a look at Waterson discussing the franchise below.
“I really didn’t know what I was getting into to be honest. I didn’t realize what a different thing a franchise is from a film, you know? The commitment, the duration of the shoot, the duration of the press tours, how much of your year it asks of you. And I think the things that sort of get me through it and really ground me in it are on set when you’re trying to tell the story it feels the same, thank God. Because if that wasn’t the case, I think I would feel completely out of place in that kind of environment because it is a very big machine. But ultimately the job’s, thankfully, still the same which is, can you connect with this person in this quiet moment.”

Here is the official synopsis for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald:
At the end of the first film, the powerful dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander. But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise wizards and witches up to rule over all non-magical beings.
Directed by David Yates from a script written by J. K. Rowling, the second film stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Ezra Miller, Zoë Kravitz, Callum Turner, Claudia Kim, William Nadylam, Kevin Guthrie, Jude Law, and Johnny Depp.
