Cowboys’ latest ‘bold prediction’ sees Dallas dump four-time Pro Bowler at deadline
The NFL trade deadline is hurtling closer, and the Dallas Cowboys could still swing either way.
After a disappointing offseason led to a slow start to the 2024 regular season, the Cowboys now face an uphill climb to make the playoffs in the NFC. Plus, Dallas is now hamstrung not only by Dak Prescott’s record-breaking extension, but have to plan for another megadeal for superstar Micah Parsons.
At 3-4, the Cowboys still aren’t out of the race, but it would be hard to blame them for thinking about selling some of their impending free agents. That could include a move few would have anticipated before the season–moving on from a four-time Pro Bowler.
DeMarcus Lawrence, who has spent his entire 11-year career in Dallas, is in the final season of a three-year, $40 million contract. Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report predicted that the Cowboys would look to shop Lawrence in a “bold prediction” for the trade deadline.
“The prediction here is that the Cowboys realize that they’re approaching a rebuild—head coach Mike McCarthy still hasn’t received an extension beyond this season—and decide to stockpile draft capital at the deadline,” Knox said.
“Expect Dallas to shop impending 2025 free agents like… edge-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence… in the coming days.”
Lawrence has been limited to four games this season with injuries, but he has managed three sacks and a forced fumble to this point. He was a Pro Bowler in both 2022 and 2023, so he’s still a borderline elite player when healthy, which should make plenty of teams interested in his services.
Recouping a middle-round draft pick for Lawrence might be the smartest thing Dallas can do at this point. They’ll have to be receptive to offers and see where the market leads them.
