‘Blue Beetle’ Animated Series In Development At DC Studios

Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios are set to expand the Blue Beetle universe with a new animated series, reports Deadline. Miguel Puga, known for his work on The Casagrandes, has been tapped as the showrunner and director for this venture, with Cristian Martinez penning the scripts.

The original creative team behind the 2023 Blue Beetle film will also contribute to the series. Director Angel Manuel Soto and screenwriter Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer are on board as executive producers, along with John Rikard, who held the same role in the film. Galen Vaisman, another executive producer from the film, will oversee the development of the animated series for DC Studios.

Details regarding the cast are still being finalized, with ongoing discussions for the return of key voice actors. The report suggests that the series will not simply rehash the film’s plot but will introduce a distinct storyline that could set the stage for future cinematic projects featuring the titular character, potentially played by Xolo Maridueña.

What you need to remember about the Blue Beetle movie

Directed by Ángel Manuel Soto with a screenplay by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer, Blue Beetle introduces audiences to Jaime Reyes, portrayed by Xolo Maridueña. As a recent college graduate, Reyes becomes the bearer of an ancient alien relic known as the Scarab, which grants him extraordinary powers. The film, which also stars Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, and Susan Sarandon, received positive critical reviews but underperformed at the box office, grossing $131 million worldwide on a budget between $104–125 million.

The commercial challenges of Blue Beetle were compounded by several factors, including the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes, the impending reboot of the franchise with the new DC Universe, and disruptions caused by Hurricane Hilary. Despite its theatrical struggles, it quickly became the most streamed film on the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming service Max.
