Astros vs. Phillies live score, updates, highlights from Game 5 of 2022 World Series

After experiencing the highest of highs in a beatdown of the Astros in Game 3 of the World Series, the Phillies came crashing down in Game 4 by becoming the second team in World Series history to be no-hit.

It was a combined effort by the Astros, with Cristian Javier going the first six innings before Bryan Abreu, Rafael Montero, and Ryan Pressly closed the deal.

The 5-0 win for Houston tied the series 2-2 heading into a pivotal Game 5. Of the 64 Game 5 winners of a 2-2 series, 45 of them have gone on to win the World Series. So the importance of this game cannot be overstated before the series returns to Houston for at least a Game 6.

The Astros will have their Cy Young ace, Justin Verlander, on the mound. Verlander’s struggles in the Fall Classic have continued in this series. He was perfect through the first three innings of Game 1 and it appeared the Astros were going to cruise after building a 5-0 lead, but the Phillies battled back and ended up winning 6-5 in 10 innings.

The Phillies will look for innings out of their bullpen with Noah Syndergaard making his first World Series start since 2015. Syndergaard went three innings in his only other start this postseason.

The Astros’ bats have struggled outside of periodic bursts in this series. They touched up the Phillies in the fifth inning Wednesday but were held scoreless otherwise by the back end of the Phillies’ bullpen. In fact, the Astros haven’t scored a single run past the fifth inning in this World Series.

The Phillies, meanwhile, just need to shake things off and get an early hit Kyle Schwarber said “I don’t give a s—“ when he was asked about how it felt to be in the record book for being no-hit. That may be true, but if Verlander begins Game 5 the same way he began Game 1, the Phillies may start to care very quickly.
