If you are looking for a pre-built, stylish clock that will definitely start a conversation you should take a look at the Digital Mosaic Clock from the tokarski.dev store! This gorgeous clock is supplied fully assembled and has a stunning custom-segmented display. We aren’t 100% sure as it doesn’t say in the listing but we think that it’s probably 3D printed.
The display is a wonderful custom piece of typographic design, perfect as a kind of retro-futuristic centrepiece. Powered via a USB-C connector the clock has 6 different brightness modes. It keeps time accurately through a combination of a dedicated real-time clock (RTC) IC with Seiko Epson quartz used as the crystal oscillator. There is a backup battery inside so if you need to unplug the clock and move it you won’t lose your time settings.
Under the hood, there is a Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip and the software for this device is open source. It’s written in Rust and available on a repository linked on the product page. You can re-program the device via the USB port but you’ll have to solder in a jumper to activate this capability. We’re not sure we’d even tinker with it, it’s lovely just as it is!
