Double points? Yes, please! Who doesn’t want to earn double points on your Hyatt reservations? Earning double points on a hotel reservation seems like a no-brainer. But it’s not as straightforward as it may seem.
Is it worth it to double your points with Hyatt? Is there any value to a double your points booking?
Here’s everything you need to know about earning double points at Hyatt, how Hyatt double your points work, and when and why you should or shouldn’t book a World of Hyatt double points rate.
Steve, a reader of this blog and one of my travel buddies, emailed asking:
When you do a Double Your Points rate at Hyatt does that mean 2 x 5 base points? Or is it twice including the Globalist 30% bonus?
Hyatt offered a double points promotion several years ago when they rebranded to World of Hyatt. This was a great offer and an easy way to earn lots of Hyatt points.
You didn’t have to book a separate Double Your Points rate because every stay after your second stay earned double points.
That promotion was only for a few months. Later that year award stays (rooms booked using points) started to count towards elite status.
You can still earn double points on your stays by booking a Double Your Points rate.
Only World of Hyatt members can book a double World of Hyatt points room rate. You can join the World of Hyatt hotel loyalty program for free.
Pro-tip: A Double Your Points rate is a paid cash rate. You can’t book a double points rate on an award stay booked with points or if you’re using a free night certificate.
Hyatt Double Points What You Should Know
It’s easy to book a Hyatt double points rate and there are many advantages. Scroll to the bottom of this post for step by step instructions on how to book a Hyatt double points rate.
But before you do, here’s what you should know.
Bonus Points vs Base Points
One of the most important things to know about a World of Hyatt Double Points rate is that the double points are bonus points. Not base points.
There’s a big difference between base points and bonus points.
You can use both types of points for free hotel stays, but only base points count towards Hyatt status. This is important if you want to earn Lifetime Globalist status.
When you book a Double Your Points rate, you only earn double points on the base points.
So you would get 5x base points + 5x bonus points + any applicable elite bonuses: 10% for Discoverist, 20% for Explorist, and 30% for Globalist.
If you’re a Globalist and book a double points rate for $100 a night plus taxes, you’d earn a total of 1,150 points (500 base points + 500 bonus points + 150 Globalist bonus).
Pro-tip: You’ll earn an additional 4x points per dollar when you pay with your World of Hyatt Card and The World of Hyatt Business Credit Card.
These additional points are earned on the base points. Points earned from your Hyatt Business card post separately from your stay.
You’ll see it on your World of Hyatt account as an individual line item posted 1 to 2 business days after your statement closes.
One Room Per Stay
In the past, you could book multiple rooms under the Double Your Points rate. Now, there is a limit of one room per stay per member.
While you can earn Hyatt points on up to 3 rooms at one hotel, only one of those rooms can be booked under a double points rate.
Pro-tip: Book the Double Your Points rate room for the person with the highest World of Hyatt status especially if you or they have Globalist status.
As a Globalist, you can book a Guest of Honor (GOH) reservation so that the other room/s receive Globalist benefits.
Points vs Miles
You’ll earn double points when you book a Double Your Points rate if you’ve chosen to earn points vs miles for your stay.
If you’ve chosen to receive airline miles instead of World of Hyatt points for your stay, you will not earn double points even if you book a double points rate.
Pro-tip: You can change your earning preference from miles to points at check in during your next stay. Tell the desk agent you want to earn WOH points instead of miles.
Stay Required
When booking a double points rate, a stay is required. You can’t prepay a Double Your Points rate, you pay at checkout. So you have to physically check in for your stay to earn the elite night credit and the double points.
Pro-tip: Hyatt Double Points rates are only available at World of Hyatt hotels and resorts. You can’t book a double points rate at MGM Resorts such as Vdara or Excalibur.
Cost More
A Hyatt Double Points rate will cost more than a member rate.
You can do the math to decide if it’s worth it to pay more for your room. Or you can keep reading to find out all the reasons why you should book a Hyatt double points rate.
Pro-tip: When you pay a higher base rate for your room you earn more Hyatt points including any elite bonuses. Points earned from your base rate count toward your Lifetime points.
Eligible For Upgrades
When you book a Hyatt double points rate you are eligible for upgrades based on your World of Hyatt elite status.
As a Globalist, you’re eligible for a free suite upgrade. Explorist and Discoverist are eligible for upgraded rooms.
Pro-tip: You have a greater chance of getting a better upgrade when booking a Double Your Points rate because you’re paying more for your standard room. This allows the hotel to resell your standard room for more money to last minute travelers.
Why You Should Book a Hyatt Double Points Rate
A Double Your Points rate costs more than the Member rate. But here’s why you should book a Hyatt double points rate including ways to maximize a double your points reservation.
Easy Way to Buy Points
Booking a double points rate is an easy way to buy points. And get around the yearly limit. It’s an easy way to maximize a Double Your Rate offer.
World of Hyatt allows you to buy a maximum of 55,000 points per calendar year. There are two workarounds to this rule: during buy Hyatt point promotions and by booking a Double Your Points rate.
Aren’t sure if buying hotel points are worth it? Read this post to learn when you should buy hotel points.
Pro-tip: Buying points doesn’t code as travel. But it does when you book a Hyatt double points rate. Because your hotel bill codes as travel.
So you can earn more points when you pay with a card that has a travel bonus category multiplier like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card.
Earn Points Fast
A World of Hyatt double points rate is an easy way to earn points fast. Points post a few days after your stay, usually within 2 days.
If you’re short points for an award booking and can’t make an advanced points reservation because you aren’t a Globalist, booking a Hyatt double points rate is a great way to earn points quickly.
Pro-tip: You can find inexpensive cash rates at on weekend stays in cities like Dallas.
Unlimited Points
You can earn unlimited points when you book a Hyatt double points rates. This is one of the best ways to maximize a Hyatt double points rate aka Double Your Points rate.
World of Hyatt doesn’t cap how many points you can earn on a reservation with the exception of special offers and promotions.
You only earn double points on one room, but there’s no limit to how many points you can earn with a Double Your Points reservation.
If you book a Double Your Points rate for the 1 bedroom Carnegie Suite at the Park Hyatt New York for $10,725 per night, you’ll earn 107,250 points (53,625 base points + 53,625 bonus points for the double points rate) + any elite bonuses).
Or if you’re like me and don’t have a big bankroll or haven’t won the lottery, you could book an overwater Sunset Villa at the Alila Kothaifaru Maldives for $1,505 a night and earn 15,050 + any elite bonuses.
Pro-tip: You’ll earn more World of Hyatt points when you pay for your cash reservation with your Hyatt Business Credit Card.
Earn Points on Incidentals
When you book a double points rate, you’ll earn double points on incidentals like dining and spa.
You should charge everything to your room, including all incidental charges such as dining and spa, when booking a double points rate.
Pro-tip: Confirm the hotel owns and/or manages any onsite restaurants and spas. Otherwise, your purchases will not earn Hyatt points, let alone double points.
For example, you won’t earn points at many onsite restaurants at the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar because they aren’t owned or operated by Hyatt.
Combine With Other Offers
You can combine a Double Your Points Rate with other offers. This is one of my favorite ways to maximize a Hyatt double points rate.
Although the terms say that you can’t combine a double points rate with other promotional offers, you can. You can stack it with Bonus Journey offers as well as targeted offers.
Pro-tip: You can’t combine a double points rate with another discounted room rate. Nor can you block space for a group or convention at a double your points rate.
If You Have Status With American Airlines
You should book a World of Hyatt double points rate if you have status with American Airlines and Hyatt.
As an elite member in both programs, for each Hyatt stay that you earn Hyatt points, you also earn American Airlines Loyalty Points.
You’ll earn 1 mile and 1 Loyalty Point for every $1 spent at World of Hyatt hotels. This is an easy way to earn American Airlines miles and earn higher status with American.
To earn reciprocal points, you have to link your accounts.
Pro-tip: You can earn American frequent flyer miles and Loyalty Points on a free stay paid with points or a free night certificate. It’s as simple as eating at the hotel restaurant or buying a snack.
When to Book a Hyatt Double Points Rate
Now that you know why you should book a double points rate, here are the best times to book a Hyatt double points rate.
When Member Rate is Not Available
You should book a World of Hyatt Double Your Points rate when the member rate is not available and you can only book the standard rate.
If only the standard rate is available to book, it can make sense to pay a little bit more and if available, book a double points rate.
Pro-tip: It makes sense to book a Double Your Points rate if it’s up to $25 more. Unless you’re using other people’s money.
When Using Other People’s Money
One of the best times to book a Hyatt Double Points rate is when you’re using other people’s money.
In other words, if someone else such as an employer or client is paying for your stay. This works best if you can pay and get reimbursed for the hotel room charge. Or if you are an authorized user on a company credit card.
Pro-tip: The best cards to pay for your World of Hyatt stay are the Hyatt Business Card and the Chase Sapphire Reserve.
When Paying Cash
You should book a Hyatt Double Points rate when you’re paying cash.
If you’re already paying cash for your room, it can make sense to pay slightly more for your room to earn double base points.
Pro-tip: Some hotels don’t allow a Double Your Points rate on suites. Make sure the room category you want to book offers the double points rate.
When Charging Everything to Your Room
One of the most advantageous times to book a World of Hyatt double points rate is when you don’t plan on leaving the resort and are charging everything to your room. As long as those charges post as eligible charges.
Pro-tip: You should consider booking a Double Your Points when staying at an all-inclusive resort despite everything being included. You’ll earn more points. Scroll back to read all the reasons you should book a Hyatt double points rate.
Earn American Airlines Miles and Loyalty Points
You can earn American Airlines miles and Loyalty points when you book a World of Hyatt Double Points Rate.
American Airlines miles and Loyalty Points aren’t as easy to earn as other miles and points. It’s easier when you have the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® World Elite Mastercard® or the Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®.
If you have elite status with American and Hyatt, you earn points in both programs for flights and hotel stays.
Pro-tip: There’s no limit to how many American Airlines miles and Loyalty Points you can earn from a Hyatt stay.
Why You Shouldn’t Book Hyatt Double Points Rate
There’s only one reason you shouldn’t book a Hyatt double points rate, cost.
Double Points rates can make sense, but you should do what works best for you financially. What works for you is what gives you the best value for your life. Miles and points are about freedom.
Pro-tip: Do the math to decide if the cost of booking a Double Your Points rate is worth the additional points and miles.
