Foxie Clock 2.0 is an Edge-Lit Masterpiece
Clocks come in all shapes and sizes, but you’d be hard pressed to find one that combines a retro feel, with modern technology and excellent craftsmanship, better than the Foxie Clock 2.0. The device displays numerical values on a series of transparent slides, which are engraved with numbers and configured in four rows to largely imitate the behavior of 4 Nixie tubes. A colon character is also implemented in the middle for separation.
The base of this device is brilliantly made out of an assortment of woods, which holds the slides in place along with a controller PCB. This PCB mounts addressable LEDs that edge-light each slide as required, along with an interface joystick and LEDs for user feedback. Overall control is via a 160MHz RISC-V ESP32-C3-MINI, which provides an ample amount of processing power, as well as WiFi and (not yet implemented) BLE capabilities.
Time setting can be performed via WiFi, and in this mode it syncs on boot and every 3 hours. If you so prefer (or if WiFi is not available) you can manually set the time, and it brilliantly provides RTC backup power for around 2 days via a supercapacitor. The clock also features a light sensor for “automagic” brightness control and expansion ports for whatever you can imagine!
