The Block 2022 episode 9 recap: ‘I want to leave. I hate it here’ — Block contestant’s meltdown
Sharon is once again like a very beautiful deer in the headlights this week, doubting herself and hating the experience (but forcing herself to keep going, unlike runaway “influencers” Elle and Joel).
“I used to be a really bubbly, happy person, then a week ago I came on The Block,” she says, deep into a night of painting. “I want to leave. I hate it here.”

Underdogs win due to unorthodox bathroom feature
So few would begrudge her some positive judge feedback, and a win this guest bedroom week, except perhaps for Dylan and Jenny, who were pipped by just half a point thanks to Sharon and Ankur using the bonus point they won in the challenge earlier in the week.
Sharon and Ankur spent $13,403 on their bright, white room featuring a restored original fireplace, study nook, skylights and rattan bedhead.
The judges’ only real criticism is poor painting on the ceiling, a ceiling rose placed way too close to a skylight and what looks like a bunch of dead weeds in a vase on the mantelpiece.

Their room has the judges declaring them back in the game, after a rough few weeks.
Dylan and Jenny were unlucky to miss out on the win for their $12,145 room featuring subtle gingham wallpaper, checked wooden bedspread, velvet armchair and the only walk-in robe. The worst the judges could come up with was the fact the curtains were impossible to open and close over the plantation shutters.

Rachel and Ryan’s expansive $14,966 room won plenty of praise for its contemporary custom panelled wall, olive green robes with wooden handles, built-in bench seat and mirror but they were slammed for their painting.
“It is really messy. I can see every brushstroke, every roller mark and it’s distressing me,” Darren Palmer says, proving he knows the meaning of true suffering.
Shaynna questioned the need for a skylight, and thought the furniture and feel was too modern for the heritage house, echoing her bathroom criticism last week.
Rachel and Ryan were again criticised for neglecting the heritage of their house, and also for their sloppy painting.
“We’ve done the cornices, we’ve done the skirts, we’ve held on to some of the heritage items. What more would they like? A horse going through our house?” a frustrated Rachel asks.
Tom and Sarah-Jane have a hilarious barney thanks to a fairly monumental error by Tom.
He neglected to notice that by installing their robe down a side wall leading to a window that that window would no longer be centred, and even more disastrous, would prevent one of the robe doors from opening.
It was all going so well for Sarah-Jane and Tom, until the judges noticed their wardrobe door wouldn’t open and their window wasn’t centred.
Luckily Sarah-Jane takes it well.
“Tom, I will literally punch you in the f … king face,” she says when she discovers A: the error, and B: the fact he thinks it’s actually fine.
Shaynna Blaze describes the robe as “unusable” and Neale Whitaker agrees “that’s a fairly major issue”.

It’s a shame because before they noticed it, the judges were loving the $8554 room featuring subtle tree wallpaper, wainscoting and what Whitaker described as hitting “the sweet spot between heritage and contemporary, town and country”.
Last week’s winners were this week’s recipients of faint praise from the judges, who found Omar and Oz’s room confusing.
They liked the dark herringbone floorboards, but without any heating in the room worried it will be too cold.

They also found the design, with VJ panelling high up near the ceiling, high picture rails and generic artwork too busy, but noted the paintwork was excellent, something Rachel and Ryan would do well to attempt.
