Melbourne auctions: Family finds Ormond forever home, Ferntree Gully sale

21 Wallen Road, Ormond sold under the hammer as Melbourne kicked off an early selling season.

A family from Singapore finally laid down their roots in Ormond after moving to Australia just before the pandemic began.

May and Billy Tran said they had been searching for a house to settle down in after they arrived in Melbourne in mid-March last year.

They successfully snapped up a three-bedroom house at 21 Wallen Road for $1.647m, well above the $1.54m reserve, on Saturday after a difficult search in 2020.

Ms Tran said the fully-renovated property “felt like home” from the moment they first stepped inside.

She said she was pleasantly surprised to take home the keys after fighting it out with two other parties across a total of 30 competitive bids.

“At the end of the auction I really didn’t think we would win,” Ms Tran said. “I’d set my mind on letting (the other bidders) have the house.”

“We’re hoping we can have a more stable life now after moving from Singapore, then New Zealand and then to Melbourne.”

McGrath Sandringham principal Fran Harkin said the house had “all the right ingredients” to sell well under the hammer.

“A lack of stock is really driving demand, and this was a really good sized-family home which appealed to a real mix of buyers,” Ms Harkin said.

In Ferntree Gully it only took a matter of minutes to sell the sought-after four-bedroom pad at 25 Perra Street with sparkling city views and a swimming pool.

Ray White Ferntree Gully’s Ben Thomas said four bidders drove the sale $100,000 above reserve to a whopping $1.02m.

“It was on the market within three bids,” Mr Thomas said.

“It’s one of the quickest auctions I’ve ever had, the market is out of control at the moment.”

Agents say the auction drew a massive crowd.

Barry Plant North Eastern Group’s Hayley Margetts said the “popular pocket” was “packed” with bidders and onlookers as the three-bedroom house sold for $635,000 – $85,000 over reserve.

“We had 101 groups through to inspect the property and about six bidders so it was a really competitive one,” Ms Margetts said.

She said it’s prime location close to Westfield, public transport and the property’s open-plan living helped seal the deal for the young buyer.
