Say cheese to a stunning factory conversion

Standing tall in a picture-perfect rural landscape, it’s hard to imagine this stone building was once a cheese factory.

In fact, when current owner Sharon Pankhurst and her husband first set eyes on the property at 797 Randell Rd in Hindmarsh Island, 35 years ago, it was a “complete wreck”.

But that didn’t deter the family from taking on a massive renovation project to restore the 1900-built, all-stone building to its former glory.

Today, ‘The Cheese Factory’ as it’s popularly referred to, is a stunning industrial-chic home that oozes both history and charm.

Set on more than 5 hectares of land with olive groves and native flora around, the factory has been converted into a three-bedroom home with features like exposed stone walls, high ceilings and polished timber floors.

“A lot of blood, sweat and tears have gone into restoring it,” Ms Pankhurst said.

“It ran as a cheese factory till about 1966. We bought it in 1987 as my husband was very keen to renovate an old cottage or an old building.

“Despite its condition, we fell in love with this property and wanted to retain the charm of the place.”

Reminiscent of the home’s past is an original cheese churner that makes quite a statement in the grand kitchen. Open-plan living dominates the centre of the home, which also has a separate studio space with its own verandah.

A rear addition to the building is the perfect spot to take in the countryside views. The master bedroom on the upper level boasts an ensuite and a walk-in wardrobe.

The home is also an entertainer’s delight with the rear stone terrace ideal for hosting soirees.

“It’s a peaceful setting and no matter which side you look, you will find trees and fields,” Ms Pankhurst said.
