FIRST HOME
I purchased my first investment property when I was in my early 20s.
It was a three-bedroom house right near my parents’ home in Pascoe Vale and I had to borrow the deposit, which was an incredibly scary proposition for young 20-year-old.
I bought it for $170,000 and didn’t do much to it except renovate the bathroom and the kitchen, as well as giving it a light paint and new carpet.
I transformed it into a blank canvas, which is something I was confident would resonate with prospective buyers. This must have worked because it was pretty much always rented out and I sold it for $520,000.
CURRENT HOME
I’m currently renting a modest three-bedroom home while I am finally building my dream home. I’ve got five kids under the age of nine and the youngest is two months old.
We’re demolishing our previous 1970s home and building on a 5,000sq m block on the banks of the Maribyrnong River.
DREAM HOME
I’m building it now and it’s scheduled to be finished in 2023.
The feel of the home is very much like a resort. It’s going to be a fantastic place to retreat after a hectic day, true escapism. But it will be homely, liveable and relaxing for the wife and kids.
There’s going to be something for everyone: an indoor skate ramp and basketball court for the boys, a dance studio and ballet barre for my daughter, and vineyard out the back to keep my wife happy and a car gallery for me.
We had to keep making revisions to the plans as the number of bedrooms required kept growing – I went from three kids to five over the planning period.
We’re keeping some sentimental elements from the old family home structure, as there’s some really nice memories there from when we first brought home the kids from hospital or spent lazy afternoons playing footy in the backyard.
