A SHOWSTOPPING Moriac home was hot property at auction on Saturday, with five bidders pushing the price over $2m.

Local buyers paid $2.015m for the five-bedroom residence at 9 Lavinia Court, setting a residential sales record for the town in the process.

The buyers first inspected the 0.43ha property three weeks ago and were drawn to Moriac’s quiet location.

“We’re from Anglesea, originally from Geelong,” the buyer said.

Bidding opened at $1.5m for the property that was listed with price expectations of $1.5m to $1.6m, and slowly climbed before the buyer made a late play to secure the keys.

McGrath, Newtown listing agent Mergim Ibrahimi said more than 100 groups had inspected the home during the campaign.

“We had 15-odd people that were going to bid,” Mr Ibrahimi said.

“An incredible result, obviously, this far above reserve you can’t say it was expected.

“The numbers and the statistics and everything could suggest that something like this could have happened.

“The reserve was set within the range we quoted, we didn’t deviate from that.

“It’s certainly set the benchmark for Moriac by over half a million.”
