It’s a long way from Parramatta.

‘Wannabe westie’ Andrew Charlton’s electoral battleground of Parramatta is a frustratingly slow drive through Sydney traffic, and a world away from his $20m+ Eastern Suburbs mansion.

‘Economics whiz kid’ Charlton is running as Opposition leader Anthony Albanese’s ‘captain’s pick’ in the crucial western Sydney seat of Parramatta in the upcoming federal election.

According to reports, Charlton, 43, has just bought a four-bedroom red brick home for around $2m in Parramatta.

An ‘exquisite trophy home’.

However he still holds the ‘exquisite trophy home’ he bought for $16.1 million at auction in November 2020.

Given the extraordinary price growth of Sydney homes, especially in the affluent east, since that time, the home would likely be worth north of $20m if it was on the market today.

“Tucked away in Bellevue Hill’s finest position, this exquisite trophy home captures a spectacular 180 degree vista stretching from Bondi and the ocean all the way to the iconic Sydney Harbour,” the home’s listing read.

It’s now probably worth more than $20m.

The six-bed, 4.5 bath Victoria Rd home named ‘Fintry’, was one Mamamia co-founders Mia Freedman and partner Jason Lavigne were infamously evicted from.

On the balcony off the master suite, which had beautiful harbour views to the left and an ocean outlook to the right, Charlton and his wife — regular bidders at trophy homes across the east in recent months — looked like they’d finally found the one, a report on the 2020 auction read.

The sales agents had been careful not to reveal their identity, but others recognised the power couple.

Charlton was certainly cashed up, having in February sold his highly successful boutique consultancy AlphaBeta, that advises organisations on how to respond to technological, economic and social change to Accenture.

As the gavel fell, with Charlton the successful bidder, he kissed his wife.

Charlton was earlier this week savaged as a ‘wannabe westie’ by NSW Transport Minister David Elliot, for crossing town in his tilt at parliament.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison proclaimed Charlton’s Liberal rival as “the real deal, the real eel” in reference to her background in the area and the local Parramatta Eels NRL team.

Labor candidate Charlton was previously an economics adviser to the Rudd Government, who saw him as an ‘economics whiz kid’.
