Mara Minutolo wept tears of joy after selling her home in Melbourne’s north and purchasing a new house within five minutes on Saturday, along with her husband John.

Adding to the couple’s happiness, the house they lived in for almost two decades, 3 Witton Court, Greenvale, sold for $125,500 above reserve.

Ray White Craigieburn agent Trish Orrico said multiple bidders participated in the auction, which began with a $750,000 bid.

Offers for the four-bedroom house quickly soared past its $770,000 reserve.

Ms Orrico said a retired couple who have older children won the property’s keys with a $875,500 bid.

“They are from Victoria and recently sold a farm, and are coming back to the suburbs,” Ms Orrico said.

“It’s a great result, we definitely weren’t expecting the house to sell for more than $100,000 over reserve.”

While their house was going under the hammer, Mr and Mrs Minutolo were on the phone to a Ray White agent attending an auction for a Craigieburn property they hoped to buy.

Luckily, the Minutolos, who are downsizing, successfully purchased the home.

“They literally bought and sold within five minutes,’ Ms Orrico said.

Mr Minutolo said he and his wife broke open a champagne bottle afterwards.

The pair, who have three children, moved into their Witton Court house 19 years ago.

“At the time, it needed a lot of work done and had to be completely renovated,” Mr Minutolo said.

“When we moved in here there was wall to wall carpet, it was quite old and dusty.”

The couple fixed up the mid-1980s house themselves, including refitting the kitchen, ensuite and bathroom, where they installed a spa bath.
