Four bidders battle for remarkably renovated builder’s own home
Competition was fierce for a builder’s own home in Belmont at auction on Saturday.
Four bidders made a play for a remarkably renovated home that exceeded price hopes by more than $100,000.
The four-bedroom house at 27 Mernda Pde sold under the hammer for $1.295 million.

For the buyers, it’s a case of coming full circle.
Originally from Geelong, they have been living in South Australia for the past few years, had their hearts set on the Belmont home and its location close to their sons.
They even had an auction Plan B in case they missed out, but with some determined bidding, didn’t have to activate it.
“We’re moving from Adelaide, we’re really excited,” the buyer said.
Bidding opened at $1.05 million and reached $1.22 million, where the third bidder chimed in.
A fourth face in the race emerged with a bid of $1.265 million, and from there, the price slowly climbed to $1.295 million.
The property was listed with price hopes of $1.14 million to $1.17 million.
Buxton, Highton agent David Gray called the auction, and said he knew that bidding would be competitive, but the eventual selling price surprised even him.
“The result has set a benchmark for that particular part of Belmont,” Mr Gray said.
“We shifted the price range towards the end of the campaign, based on feedback, and tried to keep up with the market.
“The price quickly got past the reserve, and there were a few in the crowd that didn’t get a turn, and some faces dropped pretty quickly.”
Mr Gray said the home, a builder’s own, had been effectively rebuilt, and had drawn all sorts of interest.
It has all the features expected of a contemporary home, such as an open-plan living, dining and kitchen zone linked to an outdoor deck in the north-facing backyard.
Mr Gray said his vendors, who have spent the past few years tirelessly renovating the home, were ecstatic with the result.
“There was a sense of shock when I went back inside, a couple of tears of relief and excitement,” Mr Gray said.
“It’s essentially a brand new home, they kept about two of the front walls.”
Inside, Bosch and Smeg appliances, Caesarstone benches and stylish pendant lighting are among the kitchen highlights.
