Footballers who played the property game in 2021: Jack Viney, Shane Crawford, Sharni Norder, Jack Ziebell

Hawthorn great Shane Crawford booted his family pad at 44 St Andrews St, Brighton in October.

Melbourne’s favourite footballers kicked goals on and off the field in 2021, trading properties amid a red-hot market.

Premiership star Jack Viney snagged $4m in less than two weeks after selling his family home at 39 Hill St, Hawthorn and an investment property at 46 Rothesay Ave, Elwood in May.

Foreshadowing the club’s 2021 Grand Final victory, Viney and wife Charlotte went home winners after notching sale prices of about $2.42m and $1.9 respectively for the houses.

At the time, the Demon said: “All things are going well for the Vineys and the Demons at the moment. Happy days.”

Netballer turned AFLW player Sharni Norder (nee Layton) also played the property game this year, bouncing the Bonbeach townhouse she built at 3/2 Trent Court.

The Commonwealth Games champ scored $872,000 for the three-bedroom, two-bathroom abode in February, which she sold soon after completion to move to a bigger block in Frankston with husband Luke.

Retired Hawthorn legend Luke Hodge handballed his five-bedroom Glen Iris home at 12 Brownell Rd in October after making his move to Queensland permanent.

The four-time premiership player and three-time premiership captain is understood to have snagged more than $3.38m for the house, which he described as suiting his family “to a tee”.

“As an AFL player you can’t go out as much and that barbecue alfresco area is where we did a lot of the family dinners and entertained a lot of teammates and their families over the years,” Hodge told the Herald Sun at the time.

The footballer had $2.9m-$3.1m price hopes for the property, where he enjoyed the backyard’s pool and sauna for his post-game recovery sessions.

Meanwhile fellow Hawks great Shane Crawford and partner Olivia Anderson amassed a striking sale of about $9m for their luxurious Brighton pad.

The 44 St Andrews St property featured four bedrooms, a 20m magnesium lap pool, tennis court and a pool house with a gym and a steam room.

The couple sold after making a sea change to northern New South Wales with sons Charlie, Jack, Ben and Harry last year.

Crawford previously said the historic 1887-built Victorian “needed a bit of love” when he and Anderson first bought it in 2009, which CoreLogic records show they paid $3.05m.

North Melbourne captain Jack Ziebell also booted his Maribyrnong “bachelor pad” for a new family residence in November.

Doug Hawkins’ 1 Akers Court, Darley, house is still for sale.

After inking a new two-year deal with the club the footballer snatched a $1.845m sale for the 99 Dale St abode.

Alexkarbon Real Estate North Melbourne director Charles Bongiovanni told the Herald Sun Ziebell would host some of the “young boys from the club” at the sleek four-bedroom, two-bathoom pad, to “help them find their feet”.

The luxurious riverside home had originally bee listed for $1.6m-$1.75m and boasted an expansive family zone, complete with a solar heated lap pool and an alfresco area.

Beloved former Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy also sold his Northcote home amid a move west.

The two-time All-Australian announced in September he would be joining the Dockers as their head of football operations and performance for both the AFL and AFLW sides.

As a result, he offloaded the four-bedroom Federation house he had shared with stylist wife Justine and their children, Jarvis, Frankie and Delilah, for the past five years.

CoreLogic records show the 13 Andrew St property exceeded its $2.6m-$2.8m price guide to sell for $3.05m in August after just a week on the market.

And former Footscray captain and football larrikin Doug Hawkins is still hoping for a sale for the regional Victorian home he built while playing at the club.

The former wingman and wife Raelene are kicking their much-loved family home at 1 Akers Court in Darley, a suburb of Bacchus Marsh, after 33 years.

It has a $1.375m-$1.45m price guide.

Hawkins said the property became a second home for his Bulldogs teammates, who would often drive up after a game for a recovery session.

“It was a great opportunity to bring all the boys from the Bulldogs up on a Sunday,” Hawkins said.
