Kew house price record: Cardia Bioplastics boss Pat Volpe lists mansion modelled on best hotels
A bioplastics boss has listed his extravagant Kew mansion designed to emulate the world’s best hotels for what would be a suburb record.
Priced at $17m-$18.5m, the five-bedroom 10-12 Rowland St joins a six-bedroom “fairytale” mansion at 292 Cotham Rd ($17m-$18.7m) and 23 Swinton Ave ($12m-$13m) in a rush of ultra-lavish dream homes to the market in the blue-chip inner eastern suburb.
The current suburb record is $12m, achieved by both 39 and 35 Sackville St, according to CoreLogic, meaning all three of those properties are likely to raise the bar.

Marshall White Stonnington director Marcus Chiminello said the lavish 1979sq m Roland St property was ahead of its time when it was built.
A grand sweeping staircase takes pride of place in the striking black and white marble-tiled entrance foyer, beneath a skylit dome that floods the space with natural light.
Hand-crafted ornate plasterwork, French silk wall coverings and oak parquetry floors are luxe additions to the formal dining room.
A glittering-white kitchen made of Calacatta marble, a home cinema and a billiards room with a bar are among the highlights, while the main bedroom has an opulent dressing room and marble ensuite.
“It was about an $8.5m build way back 15 or 16 years ago. It was a very expensive build and it was significantly ahead of its time,” Mr Chiminello said.
“The amenity that it has in terms of the pool, the billiards room, the gymnasium, the cinema … it feels like a resort.”
Mr Chiminello said the home’s current owner, Mr Volpe, chairman at Cardia Bioplastics, told him he’d taken inspiration from his overseas travels when designing the abode.
The end result was an opulent residence that had every imaginable comfort.
“He said: ‘I wanted my home to feel as good as the places I stayed in when I travelled’. It’s one of those ones, it really speaks for itself,” Mr Chiminello said.
“You can imagine if you were a father of a daughter, it being a proud moment watching as your daughter walked down that staircase, whether it was for her graduation or her wedding day.”

Outside, the resort-style pool is complemented by a spa, sauna and a gym.
A barbecue kitchen with a pizza oven is included in the cabana, which overlooks perfectly manicured gardens designed by respected garden designer Paul Bangay.
And bespoke timber panelling is a feature in the home office and separate library.
“In every way, shape or form, you feel like you’re living in a resort when you’re at the house,” Mr Chiminello said.
Expressions of interest close on November 15 at 5pm. The Volpes are selling up to downsize.
