Ian Malouf, Australia’s richest garbo, has spent a record $60 million plus on the ANZ Tower penthouse in the Sydney CBD.

The stellar price paid by the skip bin waste management entrepreneur, turned luxury yacht broker is the highest paid for a completed penthouse in Australia.

Malouf has been residing on his $40 million, 54 metre yacht Mischief on Sydney Harbour, having previously been renting Woodlands, the popular Woollahra rental property which is currently occupied by the Hemsworth clan.

For over three decades Malouf was the chief executive of Dial-A-Dump Industries, until 2018 when he sold out to Bingo Industries for $578 million, including a $378 million in cash plus shares in the ASIC listed company.

Set atop the ANZ commercial office tower, the four bedroom apartment was designed by Richard Francis-Jones spanning 2400sq m space, with interiors by Blainey North, who worked for two years on the fit-out.

It was first listed with $66 million hopes in 2016 by the selling agents, Christie’s International agent Ken Jacobs in conjunction with LJ Hooker Double Bay agent Bill Malouf.

They had it listed for 1170 days, holding their nerve to maintain its asking price despite the absence of big spending Asian buyers from being able to visit the country.

It spans three levels from the 43rd floor and has its own private car park and express lift, along with rooftop pool.

It has a private rooftop level featuring a cabana lounge and pool. It has point blank views of Sydney Tower.

Boyd had bought and amalgamated several low-rise buildings which he sold as a commercial development site to Grocon in 2013.

There have been two higher off the plan sales that have yet to settle in the Barangaroo precinct, with the $60 million whole floor apartment sale by Crown to expatriate tycoon James Packer in the One Barangaroo casino tower, plus $140 million to an undisclosed Chinese buyer in One Sydney Harbour, which was sold by Lendlease in 2019.

The Boyd’s penthouse has been a family home, althought not long after the Boyds moved in, the apartment was the 2016 venue of a short-lived peace deal brokered by Boyd between then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and broadcaster Alan Jones.

The apartment was also location for the Channel 7 television drama series Between Two Worlds.

Most visitors to the penthouse were reportedly greeted in the entrance hall with a built-in floor-to-ceiling wine fridge full of the world’s best champagne.
