Young family snaps up modern Newtown home as auctions move online for Covid lockdown
Victoria’s seven-day circuit breaker lockdown did little to dampen the enthusiasm for a modern two-storey home in Newtown, which sold around $70,000 above price hopes.
The contemporary, three-bedroom residence at 12 Allen St sold for $921,000 at an online auction on Saturday as six bidders vied for the keys.
Richardson, Newtown agent Matt Poustie switched to Zoom to push ahead with Saturday’s auction at the scheduled time, after lockdown rules banned in-person auctions for the weekend.

Bidding for the 256sq m property opened at $700,000, with five parties placing a bid before Mr Poustie confirmed it was on the market as the price reached $875,000.
Mr Poustie later said it was on the market at $850,000.
A sixth bidder joined two others still in the race at $910,000, but buyers advocate Tony Slack held the final bid of $921,000.
Mr Slack was acting for a young local family.
Mr Poustie said the vendors had lived at the address since the residence was built in 2016.
“It’s a fantastic modern home with beautiful views over Highton,” Mr Poustie said.
“A stunning, modern architectural design with high ceilings, great natural light, expansive views and a secure outdoor entertaining area.”
The property had been listed with price hopes before auction from $750,000 to $810,000.
The location offered multi-suburb benefits, with Newtown’s prestigious schools close by and Highton Village a quick trip across the Barwon River.

The floorplan positions most of the living areas on the ground level and the bedrooms are on the upper level.
The kitchen has stone benchtops, a dishwasher, gas cooktop and butler’s pantry.
Sliding doors from the living zone link to a north-facing courtyard. The property provided rear access to Camden Rd to put bins out.
The double garage has internal access and a rear roller door to the courtyard.
Other features include split-system air conditioning, gas/solar hot water, double glazing, and under-stair storage.
Mr Poustie said the result showed the strength of the Newtown and Geelong auction market.
He said 11 potential bidders had registered.
“We had bidders from Melbourne, Geelong and regional Victoria,” he said.
“The decision to keep the auction date where it had been advertised and to change it a registration only online auction was the right decision to give people the opportunity to buy while we are still in lockdown.”
