Air Fried Fish Sinigang sa Miso

There’s no question about it: if you’re Filipino, you’ve had sinigang at least once in your life. Hot, sour, and refreshing, sinigang is a soup native to the Philippines. We often consider it to be adobo’s contender for National Dish. Sinigang is a combination of your choice of meat and a typical array of vegetables, the common choices being mustard leaves (mustasa), okra, radish, green peppers, and tomatoes. Fish sinigang is one of the most popular choices for protein for this stew. With a seamless and easy to follow recipe, this fish soup is a quintessential Filipino comfort food –– perfect for any time of day!

One of the reasons fish sinigang (and sinigang in general) is so popular is that its ingredients are so easy to access. For the most part, sinigang’s ingredients are affordable, and you can find them at any local market. I really prefer working with fresh and crisp vegetables for my fish sinigang. The same goes with the fish itself; for this sinigang recipe, we’ll be using a piece of tilapia. However, this is all according to your preference. Some of my other favorite renditions of fish sinigang include sinigang na bangus sa miso and sinigang sa salmon sa miso. Each type of fish brings its own unique flavor and taste to the classic meal.

Unlike the typical fish sinigang, the tilapia in his recipe will be air fried. Instead of just cooking the fish, frying it beforehand does wonders for the taste, and adds more flavors to the sinigang! Try it yourself; you’ll really be able to taste the difference. If you don’t have an air fryer at home, however, pan frying your fish works just fine.

Because we’ll be frying our fish for the fish sinigang, an air fryer is an important aspect of making this meal! Air fryers are so helpful and dynamic; from french fries to lechon kawali to other ingredients, buying one really is a worthy investment. They’re also super easy to use, too.

How to Make Air Fried Fish Sinigang sa Miso

Fish sinigang requires some preparation beforehand, as you’ll be dealing with a variety of ingredients. Slice your 6 ounces of daikon radish. Make sure that your tomatoes and yellow onions are also wedged.

To clean your tilapia for your fish sinigang, create tiny slits on both sides of the fish very carefully. Rub salt all over the fish, and then rub cooking oil across it as well; you can use a basting brush for this, so as to get your hands less greasy.

This is where your air fryer will come in. Air fry each side of the fish for 10 minutes for about 350F. Then, remove your tilapia from the air fryer and let it cool down on a nearby plate. Just like that, you’ve prepared your fish for your fish sinigang!

Now it’s time to actually make the soup for your sinigang. Depending on how much soup you want for your dish, pour 6 to 8 cups of water into a large cooking pot. Bring your water to a boil before turning the heat down. Once it’s cooled down slightly, add in your onions, tomatoes, daikon radish, and a quarter cup of miso. Miso is a type of soybean paste popular in Japan; its salty, yet savory aroma brings a welcome addition to the fish sinigang. Miso also helps in balancing out the flavor of the fish, lest it become too overwhelming. It’s a great palate cleanser, evidenced by how the Japanese enjoy miso soup during meals.

When your water begins to reboil, toss your fish back in the pot and let it cook for 2 more minutes. Add 40 grams of your Knorr Sinigang sa Sampaloc recipe mix, and stir. Incorporate and blend all your ingredients together well, making sure your recipe mix dissolves in the water.

Now put the okra and long green peppers into your fish sinigang pot. Cover it with a lid, and let it cook on medium heat for about 5 minutes. Add your mustard leaves now, too –– it’s important that we don’t add them in too soon, because we don’t want them to appear too “wilted” in the pot. Season your fish sinigang with ground black pepper and fish sauce to taste. The fish sauce helps in enhancing the umami taste of your tilapia in the fish sinigang. Patis is always a great combination for sinigang after all –– no matter what protein you’re using!
