Karen Knowles: Singer’s Surrey Hills home bought by fellow artist

Karen Knowles is no longer seeking a sale for her Surrey Hills home.

Singer-songwriter Karen Knowles’ tranquil Surrey Hills treehouse has been bought by another musician with an appreciation for its inspiring design and surrounds.

The treetop timber tempter at 46 Boisdale Street fetched $1.76m on January 29 after an expressions of interest private sale campaign with a $1.75m guide.

Fletchers Canterbury director Tim Heavyside said the four-bedroom pad’s new owner “absolutely loves the home and loves the high ceilings and the timber work”.

“It’s going to be a fantastic home for her family for years to come,” he said.

Knowles, who has performed with The Seekers alongside her own extensive solo career, previously told the Herald Sun she instantly “fell in love” with the home almost 30 years ago.

The property was designed by architect Bala Balendra, inspired by the work of Glenn Murcutt, who he is believed to have worked with as well as Sri Lankan powerhouse Geoffrey Bawa.

Mr Heavyside would not comment on the buyer’s identity, but said architects had shown interest in the property, with local and international potential buyers throughout the campaign.

“The uniqueness was a major drawcard for buyers,” he said.

Knowles loved how the design brought nature in.

A refined, minimalist kitchen.

“It’s a very one-off build; that type of timber and construction — it’s beautifully built and going to stand the test of time — and it’s got a beautiful feeling and ambience, like living in Byron Bay or somewhere in the tropics, or the Dandenong Ranges with its lush gardens, which was very appealing to not only the purchaser but the broader segment of the market.”

Knowles was “very happy” with the result as she moved on to her next chapter.

She previously told the Herald Sun her dreamy longtime home had been special for the way it brought nature into her family’s lives and its cathedral ceiling which also inspired creativity.
