Big Melbourne auction sales headlined by Shane Warne Brighton house amid snap lockdown
A snap lockdown couldn’t stop strong auction results being notched across Melbourne, as buyers boldly bid online and over the phone.
More than 300 vendors pushed ahead with sales under the hammer last week, according to realestate.com.au, despite the sudden shutdown of the real estate industry.
Their determination paid off, with a 92 per cent early clearance rate recorded from 319 results so far.

A last-minute phone auction was called for 16 Park Street in Brighton, which was previously owned by spin king Shane Warne.
Sources suggest the incredible mansion was the most expensive weekend sale, recording a $10.15m result.
Marshall White Bayside director Andrew Campbell declined to comment on the sale, but previously told the Herald Sun that Warne had created the mansion before selling it in 2009.
“The tennis court is a drawcard because it runs north to south; in Brighton a lot of clients want the north to south tennis court,” Mr Campbell said.
“It’s also only one minute to the beach and one minute to Church Street.”
A Zoom auction was called for 48 Rosemore Road in Rosebud, which attracted six determined bidders.
Belle Property Rosebud director Grant McConnell said the “dated” house on a large block shot $181,000 above reserve to $981,000 before the hammer fell to an investor. The near seven-figure sum was well above the $750,000-$825,000 price guide, leaving the vendors “in shock”, he added.
A 1970s flat at 4/12 Grange Road, Alphington, went to a phone auction ahead of schedule on Friday afternoon, attracting three bidders who were enticed by the affordable $450,000-$495,000 guide.
Bidding was heated among two first-home buyers and a Tasmanian buyer until the hammer fell at $548,000, Barry Plant Northcote/Preston director Loretta Khoo said.
Ray White Rowville sales manager Nick Strilakos said 2/1267 Stud Road in Rowville sold for $742,500 after 11 registered bidders pushed it beyond the $660,000 reserve.
Vendors Anthony and Laura, who did not provide their surname, said they were “beyond thrilled” they went ahead with the auction online.

“I actually think it did better than what could have happened onsite,” Laura said. “It started raining as the auction was about to begin, which was a bit of a sign.”
AFL commentator and former St Kilda star Leigh Montagna was due to sell his Albert Park terrace at 37 Kerferd Road on Saturday, but accepted a generous early offer about two weeks ago.
Marshall White Port Phillip agent Nicholas Hoo would not comment on his vendor’s identity, but said they were glad to have “dodged a bullet” before lockdown.
“It was one of only a few three-bedroom houses on the Albert Park market at the time and we ended up having two people make pre-auction offers,” Mr Hoo said.
“We got an offer above the range and the vendors were happy to accept that and avoid auction.”
The family home had been listed with a $1.75-$1.85m price guide.
The outstanding results give hope this week’s Super Saturday of more than 1000 auctions can carry on, regardless of government restrictions.
