MOVING ON UP

Sharni Norder

Collingwood AFLW player, former netballer and panellist on Fox Footy’s Bounce, whose memoir, No Apologies, will be available from February 23

FIRST HOME

A family investment property (a three-bedroom townhouse) in Bonbeach. My sister and I invested in it together and had it for five years. She was living in it, while I was still renting in town to be closer to work. I was single at the time and investing with family made it easier to get my foot in the property market. It was a really exciting step, learning where to invest and how to invest. It sold in December (for $825,000).

My very first rental was in Adelaide (where Norder, nee Layton, played for netball club the Thunderbirds) where prices are through the roof. It evened out when I came back to Melbourne and rented for $400-$500 per week as opposed to $700 in Sydney.

CURRENT HOME

I moved down to Frankston during COVID-19 (last year), this was the area where I grew up. I was planning on living in (a Bonbeach townhouse) I built. But in the time it took to build it, I met my now-husband, Luke, and we decided we wanted a bit more land down in Frankston. The house is 37 years old and we love it so much. It’s got angled, high ceilings and split levels. We’re on a 950sq m block, so we can have a vegie garden and compost, and live sustainably.

DREAM HOME

I ride horses, so I’d love to have property where I could see them from my back doorstep. Luke and I are slowly moving towards Mount Eliza to achieve this.

Luke and I are very family orientated, but if it wasn’t for family (keeping us in Melbourne’s southeast), we could love to move to Port Douglas. We’d love a quiet lifestyle where we could go scuba diving, and live in an old Queenslander on stilts. A resort-style home is not for us, we’d want a beach shack.
