Ex-AFL player Dale Thomas sells Glen Iris home after two-month delay

Ex-footballer Dale Thomas’ 19 Allenby Avenue, Glen Iris, home has sold after a two-month delay caused by missing paperwork.

Retired Collingwood and Carlton football star Dale “Daisy” Thomas has kicked a multimillion-dollar property goal two months after he cancelled his Glen Iris home’s auction.

The 2010 premiership winner and All-Australian retired in 2019, but has also appeared on TV show I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here and authored children’s book Poopy Pants and Potty Rants.

He and wife Natasha are believed to have snared a sale within the 19 Allenby Avenue home’s $2.5-$2.75m price range.

The pair paid $855,000 for the home in 2009 before undertaking a big reno to transform it from a 1950s classic once owned by Victorian Premier Lindsay Thompson into a modern marvel.

The overhaul included making the home’s living zones more open plan, tweaking the upstairs floorplan and adding a walk-in wardrobe to the main bedroom.

Thomas is particularly proud of the swim-up bar he added to the home.

The Thomas’s also added a pool with a four-person swim-up bar, a deck and built-in barbecue to the backyard.

Marshall White’s Chris Barrett said the buyer, a Glen Iris local, had been hoping to tackle the property since last year.

However plans for a December 12 auction had to be scrapped when there were unexpected delays obtaining building certificates needed for the sale.

The Thomas family added the home’s lavish backyard entertainment zone.

They also reconfigured the home’s upper storey.

The pair had just set plans for a March 27 second-chance auction this year, but the buyer came forward with an offer “that convinced the vendors not to auction”.

“It’s been a bit of a process,” Mr Barrett said.

“But they are happy to move forward with the next stage of their life.”

He added that due to the paperwork issue it had been hard to gauge how strong demand for the home had been, but it had attracted plenty of interest at open homes.

“It was well received by the market,” he said.

A modern makeover transformed the home from a dated 1950s classic.

The main bedroom had a walk-in wardrobe added to it as part of the overhaul.

He said the sale reflects a strong start to the year in Melbourne’s leafy east, with a surplus of buyers still competing for a relatively low number of homes.

“There’s still a lot of pent up demand,” he said.

“I see March being very busy.”
