‘The Penguin’ Star Colin Farrell In Talks To Play Sgt. Rock For DC Studios

Colin Farrell is in negotiations to take on the role of Sgt. Rock in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming DC Studios film, as reported by Deadline. Following his critically acclaimed and award-winning performance as Oswald Cobblepot in The Penguin, Farrell is set to continue his collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery, this time stepping into James Gunn and Peter Safran’s newly established DC Universe.

Unlike The Penguin, which exists within Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe, Sgt. Rock will be firmly set within James Gunn and Peter Safran’s interconnected DC Universe. This ensures that Farrell’s portrayal of the iconic military character will remain separate from The Penguin, keeping the two universes distinct.

Colin Farrell replaces Daniel Craig as DC’s top choice for Sgt. Rock

The film has been in development for some time, with James Gunn and Peter Safran overseeing its progress. Originally, Daniel Craig was in talks for the lead role, reuniting with Guadagnino after their collaboration on Queer. However, with Craig no longer attached, Farrell has emerged as the top choice for the part.

Balancing the production schedule will be a key factor in finalizing Farrell’s involvement. The actor has a packed slate for the fall, including the second season of Apple TV+’s Sugar and Edward Berger’s film The Ballad of a Small Player. According to Deadline, Farrell is eager to take on the role of Sgt. Rock, provided scheduling conflicts can be resolved.

Better known as Sgt. Rock, Sgt. Franklin John Rock first appeared in Our Army at War #83 in June 1959. Created by Robert Kanigher and Joe Kubert, the character is a World War II infantryman leading the Easy Company unit. Sgt. Rock has become a staple of war stories at DC Comics.
