Sub-penthouse styled by Anna Spiro sold to Melbourne buyer on overnight trip

120/72 The Esplanade, Burleigh Heads, sold under the hammer for $1.85m.

A Burleigh Heads sub-penthouse apartment styled by Aussie interior designer Anna Spiro sold for $1.85m under the hammer last night to a Melbourne buyer who flew to the Gold Coast solely to bid at the auction.

A hint of Ms Spiro’s eclectic style.

The Melburnian secured the 9th-floor apartment overlooking the ocean at 120/72 The Esplanade, Burleigh Heads, ahead of four other registered bidders from Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney.

Prices are soaring, but now is still a good time to buy. Find out why

Marketing agent Rob Lamb of Kollosche Prestige said no locals had registered but a Sydney bidder has also flown to the Coast to attend the auction.

He said the new owner was returning to his family in Melbourne today with the good news.

The seller was Melbourne-based Angus Coote, the son of internationally renowned interior designer John Coote. Angus originally bought the 150sq m property as a holiday home in December 2018 for $1.6m.

Mr Coote then commissioned Ms Spiro to give its interiors the wow factor by decorating it in her signature eclectic style.

Ms Spiro is know for designing properties such as Halcyon House at Cabarita and up-market holiday rental Bon Sol in Burleigh Heads.

When the apartment first hit the market in December last year, Mr Lamb said three-bedroom apartments on the beachfront at Burleigh were very difficult to come by, but having one professionally designed and styled elevated it to the next level for someone who wanted something extra special.

Ms Spiro’s design was inspired by the coastal views.

“You have that woven jute flooring and then the really interesting texture of the seagrass colour of the wallpaper, which has little flecks of white through it. It works so well with the coastal location, and it is a very unique, eclectic look that isn’t just one style,” Mr Lamb said.

The apartment has jute flooring and textured wallpaper throughout.

Positioned on the northeast corner of the Boardwalk Burleigh building, the light-filled unit has wide ocean and city skyline views with a large wrap-around balcony, while inside clever use of cabinetry maximises open-plan living.

Coastal blues were the focus of the design.

The apartment is in a building of 127 predominantly owner-occupied units, with the sale breaking the record price paid for an apartment in the complex.

There are four others in the same building currently on the market.

The apartment has amazing beach views.
